Dyno'd my Turbo II yesterday!

Yesterday I rolled out of bed at precisely 7:40am, after getting 3 hours of sleep. As soon as I rolled out of bed, I rolled back in bed and instantly resumed sleeping. At 8:15 I got a call from one of the two other people who I was supposed to meet up with. I jumped out of bed, brushed my teeth and ran out the door.

I met up with the *old* owner of my Turbo II, who would be driving down to the dyno in his brand new, 2006 350Z. The car is all stock aside from a nice CAI. Before leaving we swooped up our filmer and friend--who also was having a difficult time waking up. We got him out the door and we were off.

We spend the next hour and a half trying to navigate I-5 in the pouring rain. Eventually it cleared up and we were able to find the place where the dyno-day was being held. When we arrived we noticed a pack of RX8's, FB's and several FC's--both turbo and non-turbo.

I got to meet the famous "Atkins slayer" I.E. Kettleman from the NW section, and I got to watch his FB shoot 5 foot flames out the exhaust--the type of flame perfect for cooking hot-dogs. I got to witness a stock RX8 put down 155 to the wheels IIRC. Now, before your eyes go like this----> You have to understand that the dyno we were using was not your typical Dynojet or Mustang dyno. I'll post up the brand (later) when I remember what it is. Instead of using a 4000lb. drum as resistance--this dyno had another way of simulating resistance. It was explained to me, but sadly, I forget.

The local's jokingly refer to this particular dyno as the heart-breaker. I asked the dyno operator if he could explain the name to me and he explained that their dyno typically reads 15% lower than a dyno-jet, although others were saying as much as 20%.

I didn't care though, because I would have the PERFECT bench-mark for comparison: My friends 350Z, which is rated from the factory at 300hp to the flywheel. Since his car is fully broken-in, in perfect conditon and has the added benefit of the CAI--we figured that whatever numbers the Z put down could be used to better determine the HP of my Turbo II.

Before I went, I watched as another Turbo II dyno'd. This is a very interesting comparison, because this Turbo II had almost identical mods to mine.

His mods:
~s4 6-port motor using the 9:4:1 rotors
~s5 turbo
~3" DP/MP mated to a CS single-exit catback
~Home Depot Racing 3" TID
~Walbro 255lph fuel-pump
~720cc secondary injectors
~Apexi SAFC etc.

He dyno'd at 231.1WHP at 11-12psi and I can't remember his max. torque--but I'm guessing it was around 210 or so. Again, before the skepticism, if this were on a Dynojet the numbers would've likely been around 260-265WHP.

I went soon after. My mods are:
~17k miles on rebuild using RA apex-seals
~9:4:1 s4 N/A rotors
~street-port
~ThunderFab DP/MP mated to Apexi (dual) N1's
~stock turbo with ported WG (stock TMIC and BOV also)
~Greddy Profec-B EBC
~R-Tek 1.7 chip
~Walbro 255lph. fuel pump
~Marren 750cc secondary injectors
~TB mod etc.

After all was said and done, I dyno'd at 231.5WHP at around 13PSI (145K mile s4 turbo) and I forget my max. torque--but it was a little above 210. So, in essence I dyno'd with .4 more WHP than my "rival" down there. Like I said, this is an interesting comparison, because the most important differences between our Turbo II's is that I'm street-ported, but he is running a 6-port motor... Hmmm... And to reiterate, using the % that the owner/operators gave me--I'm looking at closer to 260-265WHP.

Next up on the dyno was the '06 350Z, which I felt would give us the most interesting data. Three pulls later, the max. HP which the new Z registered was 222.8WHP. You can do the math, but it speaks well for the Turbo II.

Something I've never really considered is that if my Turbo II has potentially 300HP to the flywheel and it started out at 180HP to the flywheel, that's a 120HP gain while still using the stock turbo.

BTW, my AFR's were almost unwavering in the mid-12's (dropping lower towards redline).

We collected some pretty sweet footage of the FB shooting flames, the 6-port turbo on the dyno, my Turbo II on the dyno and my buddies 350Z on the dyno. Not only that, there is some bonus footage of me racing the 350Z, AND the greatest footage of it all, where I race a local, DSM worshipping, Galant VR4 owner.

The Galant VR4 mods are:
~EVO 16G turbo
~High-compression JE pistons
~Eagle rods
~Kinetics monster FMIC
~SAFC
~Profec-II EBC
~full turbo-back 3" exhaust
~upgraded fuel-pump
~650cc injectors
~3" MAF sensor and TID
~Tial 38mm WG
~HKS Super-Sequential BOV
~*some* ECU chip
~Running 22PSI

I need to see the VR4 footage again, but I seriously think it'll be classic. My good friend (the filmer) works in the same building as the Galant owner and they're always swapping car-related stories. Anyways, my Turbo II had recently joined the conversation and the "filmer" had taken it upon himself to enter me into a challenge with the DSM owner. The "fimer's" goal was he just wanted to see the DSM owner get PWNT RUTHLESSLY, because supposedly this guy is so annoying.

I had never met the Galant owner until yesterday--but I was shocked at how much of a character this guy is. He is the BIGGEST car-nerd I've ever met. Now, don't get me wrong--I wasn't going into this race expecting to win against a VR4 that should technically run low-12's, but all I wanted to do was beat him in the driving aspect and eliminate his launch by going from a roll. The track we raced on is a local secret. It's a barely-used freeway on-ramp that allows for a slightly downhill rolling start and goes into a perfect, two-lane straightway where speeds of 120+ are not impossible.

I'll let the video footage speak for itself. Does anyone want to host it?

BTW, I'll also post up my dyno-sheet, the 350Z's dyno-sheet and my AFR sheet a little later tonight. We'll be working on editing and compressing the video if anyone wants to do us a little favor in hosting it.

Pretty good #'s especially on TMIC and stock turbo.
Cool you put down more than the 350Z, know I know how much faster my car is than the 350Z

Can't wait to see the footage.

I think the stock turbo and TMIC are pretty much maxed out right now. I'm gonna post pics of (my) dyno and AFR sheet in a few minutes.

Buy an ebay front mount like me Erik : ) I also bought a T-61 turbo with GT35R wheel... zoom zoom. Just amassing parts for now though. Going to do an E8 with lots of fuel and induction goodies. Nice numbers!

Turbo II dyno-sheet:

Turbo II dyno-sheet with AFR's

350z dyno-sheet:

And here's a short and crappy montage-video of the Turbo II on the dyno, the Turbo II racing the Galant VR4 (Turbo II at 13psi, VR4 at 22psi) and the Turbo II racing the 350z from a roll. We couldn't upload a larger video, so most of the reaction from the "DSM guy" had to be cut out. As well as his reaction (and antics) when his oil-pan bolt came out on the freeway.

Dude, I dunno what you raced in that 1st race, but it was dark as )#@%$)#%&&)!
Nice walking the Z33 though!

Yeah, you're making over 250hp if the car ran in a DynoJet.
Nice numbers!

I think the first race is the galant(camera car) vs rx7. Galant got stomped the look on the owners face was priceless, like he just dropped a brick in his shorts.

Nice numbers indeed! Now I want the full video!

Haha, yeah the video got destroyed in the two different 'compressions' that it went through. The look on Steve's face (owner of the 350Z) was hilarious too (why it was slowed down) but you can't see it cause the video sucks so much! And yeah, the Galant guy got owned so hard. After the race I called the filmer and asked him what happened... lol. Like, I was expecting him to say; "yeah, he missed 2nd" or, "yeah, he bogged BAD on the launch". Regardless, as we were looping around for another run he lost his oil-pan bolt and you can hear it banging around underneath his car on the footage. Hilarious. He was so lucky, he lost FOUR quarts of oil. Luckily he heard the bolt coming out.

I've got two questions for people who know something. First, I was told by a trustworthy source that if I would've ran on the dyno with smaller diameter wheels I would've had higher numbers. I'm currently running 18's, but would my stock wheels have been better? Also, I dyno'd in 4th gear--would there have been any benefit to dyno'ing in 3rd?

Also, any comment on the AFR's? I think the R-tek does a pretty decent job of controlling the 720's.

nice video
I was behind the camera for the mentioned events and when Erik called me after the Galant run I really couldn't express my true feelings with the owner sitting right next to me ........
So all that came out of my mouth was "yea....aaaa... we should probably just go try again"
then the DSM in all its glory dropped its oil pan bolt on the way back to do a second run.

Basically as the Seven literally ran away from the completely embarrassed dsm I listened to the owner's, overwhelming technical specific forum babble, desperately try to cover up and or explain what just had happened.

Big Boost DSM Well built TII

It was truly priceless....

Ill try to work on the brightness and compression issues when we put together a second cut including the oil pan bolt incident....and a composite zoom shot of Steve's now classic pirate grin.

do you have a EGT ???
i am runnung a setup kind of like yours...minus the streetport and its a 6 port....
but i have hit mid 12's a few times and got nervous as i was told that mid 12's can be very dangerous with high comp. rotors...

nooo... no EGT gauge. I guess I just kind of grit my teeth and rip. But yeah, I feel bad for my Turbo II after driving it AS HARD AS POSSIBLE on the dyno-day. It just felt so good doing WOT, 4th gear runs on the freeway.

Here's the dyno-sheet of the 6-port turbo that went before me. I *wish* he would post his AFR's (on nopistons.com).

Definitely not as "clean" as my sheet, but whateva'... Nice numbers for slapping a s5 turbo on an N/A motor. He has a SAFC for controlling his 720cc's and he was 'tuning it down' on each of his runs. Wheras I was tuning my Profec 'up', lol.

Too bad the video lost so much quality when compressing. My Pirate grin is the best part, behind the dumbfounded DSM owner. Anyways, the Turbo II has brutal excelleration for a stock turbo car, and it pulls past 7.5k rpms.

How bout giving an engine builder some credit here! A high compression, streetport turbo doesn't build itself. Next project...... A Turbo II powered 1974 Convertible REPU, 9.7 rotors, hybrid turbo, standalone.

Yeah, it'd do wonders to get those pesky N/A sleeves out of there and open it up a bit. Although, if I had a choice I'd just go with 8:5:1 rotors... It's fun to be unique and all, but for safety's sake I'd prefer the s4 TII rotors.
