Miata thread pitch is the same as the later rx-7 (S5+), M10x1.25 unlike the earlier rx-7 (S2-S4) thread pitch of M12x1.50

S1 is M10x1.25, the same as the S5 and miatas
81 to 88 rx7's are M12x1.5

K here's the whole story. Bought a short shifter. Bought a **** that said it would fit a Honda cuz I read somewhere on the forum that they had the same thread patern as a miata. It didn't fit so I contacted the seller in ask for an exchange so I sent it back. He emailed me and said the Honda **** and the miata **** have the same part number. So I'm having him send me one for an s5. If they have one. If not I guess I'll try to get my money back so I can buy a universal.

You can make this quite simple by just buying one with correct thread pitch. Instead of saying it is a 'honda ****' or 'miata ****', just go straight to the source and buy a '10x1.25mm ****'.
