Steve Kan tuning in Portland this summer

Hello fellow NW forum viewers.

I am attempting to put together enough people to have Steve Kan come into town and do a tuning weekend here in Portland. The minumum number needed is 5 people and I believe that we will likely have demand for well over this number. I know of at least 4 other interested parties besides myself. So, to start this ball rolling I'm suggesting a date in either May or June.

Lets start by shooting for May 12-13 or May 19-20

I will be finding an eddy current dyno facility in the Portland area. There are several shops in town with Mustang dynos to fit this bill. I will be contacting them to find out rates to rent the dyno for a day (or two) and will use this to charge each person a rate to use the dyno as part of the tuning session. Info on this to come.

Link to Steve's web site for information on his tuning and rates:
http://forums.rotarytuner.com/stevekan/tuning.htm

As soon as it appears that we have enough solid interest I will start working on deposits to reserve a spot for both the tuning and the dyno time.

I have asked Steve to check into this thread.

That would be killer. I know they have a dyna pack right now, but should be getting an in ground mustang by the end of this month if all goes correctly. They tuned my Turbo Forester at Matrix a couple years ago before they had a shop. They have nice equipment and are nice/knowledgeable/organized guys.

Thanks,
Justin Wade

So far on the dyno it looks like between $600-$1000 per day with an operator. I'm hoping I will be able to work it out so it ends up being about $100 per car for the dyno rental. This obviously depends on the number of cars that need to be run, etc.

Zachary, check out the link to Steve's web site to give an idea of his tuning rates:
http://forums.rotarytuner.com/stevekan/tuning.htm

From his site:
$350 - Stock Turbo up to 12psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$400 - Aftermarket Turbo up to 16psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$450 - Aftermarket Turbo from 16psi - 25psi of boost (race gas and/or auxiliary injection only) 1 map
$600 - Aftermarket Turbo up to 25psi of boost (pump gas and race gas tune) 2 maps

On all tuning sessions there is a Non-refundable $200 deposit.
Time Frame

Stock Turbo - 45 mins - 1.5 hrs
Aftermarket Turbo (pump gas) 1hr - 2.5 hrs
Aftermarket Turbo (race gas and/or auxiliary injection) 2 - 4hrs
Aftermarket Turbo (2 maps) 3-6 hrs

Steve requires a $200 deposit to reserve a tuning spot, and I will require full dyno payment ahead of time to reserve your dyno time, since I don't want to be left having to pay more than my share of dyno time in the end.

Perhaps we should all list our turbo configuration and type of ECU to be tuned so we can get a better idea of time needed for each person.

1 day and we are already looking to be up and running.

I have a couple of firm dates with a Mustang Dyno available in Vancouver WA. The cost for that dyno is $750 for a full day. Dates would be either May12th or June 9th- with the May 12th preferred.

I've also called PDXtuning since they just got their Mustang dyno in the ground. They should get back with me in the next two days about dates and price.

As far as splitting dyno time/money. I plan to split the dyno charge evenly between each participant. No dickering, haggling, or bitching and moaning. Please.

Lets see some more names on the list. Once we for sure have enough solid interest (and I think we do), ability to participate will be based on a first come first serve deposit schedule...so don't dilly dally and miss out.

Justin Wade

We could host something like this.... Got plenty of parking and could throw a BBQ type thing too.

We've got a Dyno Jet dyno (in ground). We'd charge $600 for the day.

We're tuning the Apex Restoration car now as a matter of fact. Would love to see some more RX's come through here. \m/

I believe Steve will handle deposits through his website for the tune, and I will take payment for the dyno through paypal. If for some reason we add a person or two to the list at the last second, causing the dyno price per person to decrease, I will refund the partial overpayment.

Justin Wade

Just add your name to the list when you know...but I've not heard any complaints about Steve's ability to get the most out of an RX-7 tune.

I appreciate the offer and would love to do this at the shop of another forum member. However, I think Steve has a preference for eddy current dynos to load the car. I have asked him about it.

I hope to have the date and dyno nailed down by the end of this week. This is going to happen....I'm giddy as a school girl.

Any reason why he wont do more than 12psi on the stock turbos? I was looking about doing 15psi.

Also as far as fuel (thats what i need to finish the car) what injectors do i need to be able to run 15psi on stock turbos, ported engine and all bolt ons?.. I've got a cosmo fuel pump currently.

I hope you guys will be tuning with race gas. Otherwise, you'll need two maps for the different Oregon fuels. I honestly can't beleive that you guys would pay around 1k each, when you have a top notch tuner that does it for around 1/4 of that, right in your back yard. CJ

Where do you see $1k each? It starts at $350 for tuning an FD with stock twins... then $400 for a single turbo upto 15psi.... well under a $1k

I would prefer to keep this out of the thread. Unfortunately not all of us have had good experiences with our local top notch tuner...just ask my wife who won't even drive my car now

So, check out Steve's web site and see if you would like to use his services:
