Well we just dumped another $3000 into this. Have some parts in the machine shop now and should be done early next week. We still have some welding to do and sort out other small issues but that shouldn't take too long. We'll do my FD housings first to make sure everything is working good.

the OE new housings have a slightly dull appearance from the machining process as do my resurfaced housings have. whenever you mill chrome it doesn't have a mirror finish anymore.

used/worn housings have a mirror finish because they are worn, it's actually preferrable to have a semi dull finish to retain oil for apex seal lubrication just as it is to have a cross hatch in a cylinder bore to lubricate the rings.

sort of but not as dull. i'm curious as to the hardness level of the chrome used by your processor. unless you peened/blasted it, that would explain the more dull appearance.

this is what the raw machined OE chrome looks like

new OE housings atually look very similar to this.

Is this some sort of heat coating? I'm just trying to figure out what it is exactly. It doesn't look like chrome per say.

so is this an actual re-chroming, or a resurfacing like goopy performance does?

OK good, follow up question, are you going to be using the same type of chrome or a harder more wear resistant one? sorry if this has already been asked but I am writing this from work so I don't have time to read through the whole thread.

A new factory house look like the rechrom glassman showed. thought mazda made the chrome surface a little porous to retain some oil for lubrication, or maybe I'm wrong.

Well all the machining is now done. We've done a mock-up of a pair of housings and all looks really good. Next week we'll get to some welding and round up some other misc parts needed. This thing will be off the ground this month barring any setbacks or problems. Don't for see any problems though as everything is really well designed.

this will be a great way to revive housings that have more extensive work like peripherals.

Yes, Pineapple built 2 engines each with 1 re-chromed housing and 1 used oem.
One commutes 50 miles per day and has been over 3 years now.

We are now looking into low temp repair processes to fix scratched/gouged inserts.

Definitely very interested in this... I am doing a peripheral 13b (and eventually a 20b.) So, I will need this done to my housings. I'm lapping and nitriding my plates hopefully sometime this month.

I'll be continuing to check this thread every now and then to see when this becomes available.

Good job guys ! it gives dead housings (worn out) a 2nd life ~

I got 2 housings on the shelf that might be able to take advantage of this. As long as price is lower (cheaper) than stock why not ?
