CT Oh dear... black smoke!

1993 Touring ~82000 miles

Pettit Cold Air Intake

Racing Beat Cat-Back

Pettit (?) Down Pipe (no pre-cat)

GForce controller (12-10-12 Boost) based on these mods (well, actually there was a Blitz cat-back on the car when I bought it - so based on that).

The car has a steady warm idle at around 750 rpm.

Coasting at speed shows vacuum ~22; at idle ~18.

Just made a trip of several hundred miles and the car starts easily, idles smoothly, and cruises fine.

The issue I'm having is a downshifting acceleration run that starts near the transition zone. Going to WOT around 4000 rpm, the car will bog down, the engine runs roughly and seems to be running very rich - emitting black smoke from the exhaust. It will not go through transition at WOT, but I have had some success getting full boost above 5000 rpm with 50-75% throttle.

Does this sound like a vacuum hose issue or something more dire?

Any thoughts are welcome and I'd be happy to expand on any questions anyone may have to help with a diagnosis.

Thanks!!

Just now saw this thread...and the sarcasm. A few suggestions......

*Maybe make more than 9 posts in 11.5 years. Then you'd be able to put it in the 3rd Gen. Section where it would get more experienced attention. There are only a few of us that frequent this section, and we sometimes miss things.
*Put something in the title that's more specific to a boost issue other than a vague "Oh dear....black smoke"
*Since you started a thread and ended up with a solution, post it up for the benefit of all of us.
*Curb the sarcasm, we don't get paid for this.

Maybe if you made the forum a *little* more welcoming?

Yeah, I don't post often - my car has been well sorted, rarely driven and I'm not that much of an expert to really help out others. I do my own regular maintenance and I'm all set with all the mods I'll ever do. So, no real need to post.... until there was.... and ....

I sign in and I'm immediately put through the ringer with all these post accumulation tasks, not allowed to post in the main section as a 'newbie,' am *forbidden* from bumping or re-posting, thought I made a slightly more intriguing subject line that may have piqued someone's interest, didn't get any replies, called up an old friend....

Anyway.... new plugs fixed it.

Since you posted on the Forum and asked for help from a community of people It seems only fitting that IF you did find the solution to your problem that you would Share it with others.
Your Gripe about "not being allowed to post in the main section" is nobody's fault but your own since you have not been an active member here and had insufficient post count as you did not contribute..like you just did when you solved your own problem and failed to share info on your solution.

This Section does not have the traffic of the main section. It is overlooked as Many members already have gotten their posts by reading the Rules(which give you NINE).
They want to get to the Section that has all the info, not just a mix of new questions and assorted guesses,no offense,Sometimes by other new guys that are not experienced.
The Newbie wants "sure fire" answers so they gain posts and go to the Specific section that can Give them there remedy. The GREEN member figures that out right away, but the guy with 5 years on forum and 9 posts can't?Even if you didn't post were you that absent that you never logged on to read any info??

You could have posted in any Specific section IF you were an active member and had more than 10 posts. It may be Comforting to know that your car is trouble free but then when you don't take the time to share your secrets of a long and trouble free ownership, the huge response of answers to your thread reflect your contribution...very little.
That's just the way it goes. Some guys get NO answers, but 99% of the time IF they find the solution they tend to share. That is what is called respecting the community, and a willingness to hep others.
So don't go Barking on people that were not being at your beckon call there for you..you were not there for anyone else,so really turn about is fair play.

We all try to help each other and nobody gets paid to do this..so If you you are so mad at the fact that you didn't get info, you should re-think the phrases:"give and take","2 way street","don't crap where you eat" and "don't look a gift horse in the Mouth".

I'm glad you got your car issues sorted out, really.
Just try not to forget that the forum is like a small community...so try not to just slide into town for a beer, then leave.
Stay awhile and shoot the ****.You may actually make some friends that share something in common.

You joined in April 2002 and all your posts are since November 5th 2013. You weren't a member, you simply registered as an owner. This is a forum for enthusiasts, you're not. And we should be more welcoming?
And in over a decade of ownership it looks like you made zero effort to learn much about your car. If your description was accurate, you have (at least) two separate issues. In my experience new plugs are a solution (at least for a while) for one, but not both. Regardless, I'll never know for sure, because you made my ignore list.

Goes to show how important first impressions are, even if you're making it after 5 years...

You're right - I am not that familiar with this forum and though I did register all those years ago, I was never a contributor, lurker or visitor. Based on my experience with some other forums on different subjects, I've never had to go through a post count process in order to make a contribution or have different levels of prior participation in order to post in different threads. Maybe the other forums are the exception and this is how most forums are run. I don't know.

Anyway, I'm sorry I rubbed everyone the wrong way - I actually thought that my post (not the subject line) was informative and respectful, so I was surprised that no one replied. My sarcastic post was out of line and done without much thought. I know there is a lot of knowledge here and I should have respected that fact.

THANKS John for understanding the Policy of this forum.
One thing about this forum is it is not like the others that I myself have frequented,or for that fact that others have attended also.
The entry process tends to separate the wheat from the chaff,so die hards get get down to the nitty gritty. It also lets "scammers" know that they have to get by some hurdles and that keeps the crap out of the FS Sections.
It tends to be a clean place with "no bull, but no holds barred" attitude.
Some guys like to post crap and that can quickly take the seriousness of the situation away. For that we try to clean up the Threads and get them back on track, especially in this Section. We need fast and precise info and No Guesses.

Mind you that I try to put a little Comedy into It sometimes to show that I am human and "it's just a car,so don't freak out..life is not over..you'll live!"
When it comes down to it,if you can get guys sharing info and posting what they have learned then it becomes a real good place That you know will be there when you run into problems.
If it gets filled with Garbage, then people might as well go the the Dealer or get a Haynes manual and hope for the best.

I started off with zero knowledge and have had at least 10 cars.(8 years) some good but one old faithful.
I'm still here learning, and do so every time I read another thread. If it was just a one time thing the forum wouldn't be needed. But the car is always requiring attention,so It is nice to know that it is here..and readily available with different points of view by different owners..instead of that Guy.."HAYNES".

Have fun and don't be such a stranger..I'll talk with Administration about Frequent "posting" miles for ya!..lol!
In 10 years you get a Pony!

So, in an effort to share with the community....

The problem was as I explained above. I contacted a friend who is a former FD owner and his first thought was that it sounded like unburnt fuel was coming out of the exhaust. Since I didn't seem to be having an issue with air, his thought was that it was bad spark plugs. He also recommended going with regular (copper) NGK plugs - 9's all around. Thinking back now, it had been quite a while since I changed the plugs. I'm not really sure how they got out of my regular maintenance routine - but never again!

Since plugs is not my favorite job on this car, I took it to my local dealer where there is still a tech that is very knowledgeable on rotaries. He agreed that the plugs were a good place to start based on the symptoms. I also had him tackle my other least-favorite job - replacing the fuel filter.

After the new plugs were in, the car was like night and day! It didn't have the stumble at transition - no black smoke - full boost and it felt just like it's old self. Hopefully it will remain trouble-free for a while now. By the way - the old plugs were toasted!

Again, sorry about how this post got a little off track with my bad attitude, but hopefully this could help someone remember to keep their plugs on their maintenance schedule! What a difference!

That is why I keep a full box of plugs on hand!..and a set in the car!.

It is just amazing that small lint ***** can turn into a big Ball of Yarn!..
There should be "simple stuff to follow when owning a Rotary"..lol
I have a couple suggestions.
One is check the small stuff first..
Two is NEVER..EVER let A Friend drive your car..EVER..!(if he loves it so much he will either get his own or buy yours!)
