VA 1993 CYM "modernization"

Hey all,

I've been a lurker here for 10+ years, so I figure it's about time to contribute something useful. What started out as a stereo upgrade on my 1993 CYM has become a full blown resto-mod. This is my second RX-7. I had an 81 with a 12a way back in the 90's, got out of the game for almost 20 years, but now I'm back. I've owned this car for about 3 years now and added about 1200 miles to the odometer.

My plans for this build are to:

Restore the interior
All panels will be covered with Alcantara.
Gauge Cluster updated with custom Speedhut gauges + some integrated electronic devices.
3 gauge pod in center speaker location.
- Speedhut and Innovate Motorsports gauges
Replace old Momo steering wheel with undecided.
All plastics are a mixture of new parts and decent shape parts. Everything will be restored.
Attempting to locate OEM carper in black.
Seats undecided.

Wiring and Electronics
Removal of all the wiring in the car (tail lights to headlights)
Infinitybox (formerly Isis Power) 20 circuit harness kit.
New ECU harness when I decide what ECU I want to run.
Hot Water Labs Sleek headlights
Car Shop Glow tails and center
Replace all bulbs with LEDs
Kenwood Double DIN headunit with navigation and Internet access.
Maybe a sub enclosure (I never really listen to music in my FD).

Exterior
Leaning towards a Rocket Bunny kit, Haven't seen a CYM one yet.
Wheels undecided

Under the hood
Current setup large street port with BNR twins. Most likely I'll be going single turbo unless I find a good deal on a 20B, but that's a project for next year.

Either way I'll be doing the following
ABS delete
A/C delete
Shave and wire tuck.

I'll be posting pics along the way. I'm already about a month into it, so some of what I post initially has already happened.

-Steve

Almost done with pulling the wires. The new setup doesn't arrive for another three weeks, so I have a little time.

Interested in seeing how your interior plan comes out. I'm going through my own interior restoration right now, using a mix of tan/black pieces (I feel like I'm one of the few who actually like the tan interior, but my seats are torn so I'm replacing them with black Corbeaus).

What color suede are you thinking of using? What color is your carpet?

I'll be going with three types of black.
Black Alcantara with some yellow stitching on the dash and door cards
Black textured on the cluster along with the wrap around from the door to the center tunnel.

Vents and all other plastic will be flat black (I may end up changing the last part if I don't like the look.

Here are a few of the panels that are already done.

I would just try to clean the carpet, but there's a big square cut out under the passenger seat. I think I may have had the car for two years before I found it. haha

That looks great! Are you going to do the dash yourself?

I know my limits haha. I'm not doing any of the upholstering myself. I sent out what was already pulled a couple weeks ago. I need to go and swap that stuff for the final batch. If I did it, it would have to be done twice.

Nah you are not the only one, I love my BB with clean tan interior.

OP, anymore picture of that CYM? Haven't seen a lot of CYM photo lately.

I'm giving them to a friend of mine. I tapped one with a finger last year and spidered the lens.

Not my cluster, but it will look something like this with some additional electronics molded in on the sides.

Yes, Broadfield Customs is doing my cluster. This one isn't mine, but I'm using the same color scheme with a couple twists.

OK, I'll bite because that cluster looks awesome. What's the ballpark for something like that?

While I wait for them to arrive, I'm trying to figure out where to mount these. I'm thinking the Master cell can go in the driver side kick panel because everything has been removed from that location. Front cell could go under the drivers side head light, since the flip up frame is gone. These things are a lot bigger than they look in the photo, so I'm not sure where to mount the rear one.

Does anyone have experience with any of the aftermarket carpet companies? Or anyone want to sell me their good to great condition black carpet?
