93 r1 edition
I'm about to buy a 93 R1 edition rx7, I've researched the cars a great deal and I've fallen in love with them. Just to be an informed customer however, I'm wondering what experiences you guys have had with them as far as safety is concerned. Are they safe cars? There was no safety report released for them sadly, only for the previous two generations.

The RX7 is small, lightweight, and fast. The car can easily be driven past its safety threshold, so it must be driven with maturity and common sense. It is not a car to buy for your 16-year-old.
My family doctor, who also takes his FD to the track, tells me the airbag has a zipper on it so that, if it ever deploys, it can double as a body bag. Sorry if that is an old joke; I'd never heard it before.
If you're shopping for a "safe" car, this is not the car to get. Try a Volvo or a Hummer.

Yeah but if I don't have anything to work for then wtf is the point of all of this work................ I could just spend all of my money on drugs like every other high schooler does, is that a better investment?? I more or less want it as a reminder of why im working so hard, otherwise whats the point. And I don't think anyone here would recommend that I stop when I'm this far ahead.

Bro, listen to these guys...they arent mocking your age. The warnings they give arent something to take lightly. You say youre 16, and if you can afford this car, AND the insurance, which btw, will be roughly 400 dollars a month, maybe a bit less, can you afford the REPAIRS? Its nice having a sick car sittin there, but I can tell you, its NOT fun to be paying an *** load of money for something you cant drive.
BTW, Im 21, my first sports car that I bought on my own was at 18, a '93 VR6 Corrado, it topped at about 140mph, I did slight mods to it, then because I was as young as I was, and thought that I was tough ****, knew how to drive, thought I knew the rules of life, I disrespected the car. I almost died for it, and almost took one of my best friends with me. My FD is FOUR TIMES the car that my Corrado was, and after my experience, you know DAMN well that I respect my car now.
If you wanna drive a nice car thats capable of going fast just cause you can, fine, but know that the repair bill for this car can get quite high. Youll end up paying a damn lot of money for something pretty. If thats what youre into, feel free. If you actaully enjoy DRIVING, I would STRONGLY advise you get something a little less 'l33t', something to drive to get yourself used to having some power under the Go pedal, but not enough to lose the car if you hit it too hard at the wrong time. Maybe a Nissan 240SX, or a Prelude SH. Both are great cars in their own right, both are much much better to start with.
Anyway, good luck. Dont die, its over-rated.

Hey, if you want to buy the car, then buy it. Some of these guys/girls have a lot of experience and are sharing their wisdom.....if you want cheaper insurance, buy the car outright without a loan, get a beat up daily driver like a civic and then insure your RX-7 as a pleasure car with only liability. If you go that route, I think you'll save quite a bit of money. Only thing is if your car is ever totaled by you or ever stolen or vandazlied, then you're out of luck. Good luck on the buy or not!!!

Thanks for everyones feed back. I can see now that even though I'm mature enough to pay for the car at 16, I still can't drive one. I'm looking into a newer safer car now instead, but I don't know if I can afford it. Once I get a new car I'll post pics of it on here, thx guys <3.

I totally agree with the guys, not just the FD all high powered sportscar is not for a 16 year old. Even if you can pay for it yourself, that doesn't mean you have the ability to drive it. Of course I am assuming you are an average 16 year old with not much driving and racing experience. If you want a cool car to impress your friends and girls, and improve on your driving skills, get a used miata and drive it for a year or two before putting mods to it. Even if you mod it keep it to suspension works only. and 15" is good enough for the miata, just put on better tires. Go to some autoX and lapping events.
Good Luck. Oh btw I got my FD when I was 21, I never got a speeding ticket nor any accident with it, but I sure did alot of those when I was 16 and 17.

Good advice on the Miata rerx7. The Miata is a nice looking car (and about as "weather friendly" as an RX7), and it handles wonderfully. However, it's not overpowered (although it doesn't feel that way). It's great for the twisties in the mountains where you live. And it's convertible (impress the young ladies ).
I think you're being wise in recognizing that even though you can afford an FD, that you're not ready to be driving one yet.
My dad has an '01 Miata that I LOVE to drive. Almost as much as my FD. I recently saw an '01 Miata for sale nearby me for like $10K. I seriously thought about picking it up. lol.

Good luck in your car search, and just think of it this way (as I did): when you do get an FD, it'll mean that much more to you because you've waited to get it.

Good advice Adam! In several years with home appreciation/mortgage paydown you can take out an equity loan or withdrawal and get something really nice. I mean reeeeally nice, and maybe something not even on the drawing board yet! And you'll have a good job or finished college, lower insurance rates, etc.
Good things come to those who wait, as maddening it is to want an FD now! Just don't knock up a girl and toss your future in the toilet for the next 18 years.
