Heat shielding for high flow cat

My interior has been getting noticeably hotter since I installed the Bonez high flow. Anyone manage to fab some heat shielding to prevent this?

Is this a new or used Bonez?

The first thing to check is to see if you have the insulation material around your shifter. I never noticed any additional heat from my Bonez cat over the stock cat. The only additional heat I ever noticed was from the transmission during track events.

on a first get, I wrapped a cat with header tape.

Didn't seem to have any negative effects.

I didn't notice any heat increase with my Bonez either. Are you sure one or both of the small heat shields did not fall off? One of mine fell off.

I bought it used from a forum member. All I recall is seeing red paint around the shifter every time I have been in that area. Any suggestions for insulating material? The plastic gets warm to the touch. I'll pull the shifter and double check, but I don't think there is any insulation around that area.

Hopefully, it's not clogged.

The insulation? I'm sure someone on here can recommend something other than OEM, but I would recommend just calling Ray. I believe the stuff is pretty cheap, under $10. There should also be another cover as well which is a rubber coated metal cover. If you don't have both, get them from Ray.

Note that a stock cat has 3 or 4 layers of shielding plus a layer of insulation on the cat, in addition to the air gaps. It would be tough for any aftermarket cat not to radiate more heat than a stock cat.

That being said, you can reuse the stock cat's shielding on a replacement. It will take some fab work, but its not that hard and works very well.

And make sure the heat shield is secure around the cat itself or you will have a nasty metallic rattle idling at red lights which can be very annoying.

I whipped *** at an auto-x last weekend with it. I was making full boost, so I doubt it's clogged. I'll call ray and order some insulation. I'll also pick up some DEI wrap. That seemed to work well on my downpipe. I don't want to bother with fabbing the old heat shield on if I don't have to. I'm trying to keep the car nice and light.

Thermo-tec makes some sort of product to warp mufflers.

Look at thermotec.com and check out p/n 16500 Muffler/CAT Heat Shield or p/n 11630 Clamp-In Heat Shield.

You mean this? http://thermotec.com/products/full/16500/16500.html

Thanks for the link. I may just give that a try instead of the wrap.

Check out this thread for what I did and some pics. There should also be a 1" thick green felt piece over the rubber seal in these pics:

Something like the stuff in your link would be great to install in the tranny tunnel. Overall, I would prefer using some self adhesive stuff like that in the tranny tunnel under the car than what I did in the interior. That stuff had a slight odor that stuck around for a while.

The pic isn't exactly lit, but it looks like you draped it over the tunnel and cut around for the shifter?

Try this http://speedzone24-7.com/item-detail.cfm?ID=16500

Speedzone24-7.com is the warehouse distributor for Thermo-Tec. I've found their prices to be a few dollars cheaper than Jeg or Summit for the same products.

Outstanding. Thanks. I had even tried by part number and had no luck with JEGS or Summit.

Larz, I would just deal with getting the stock parts and going from there. The stock parts may provide what you need without going to extremes.

That is correct.

You don't like my photo? I attended the same photography school as max cooper.
