Alternative locations for water temp sender?

Has anyone installed a water temp sender in a location other than the thermostat housing? I have mine installed there currently, but it only works when the thermostat is open. This seems....uh...less than an ideal location. The stock one is in the rear side housing, which IMO is a great spot, but I don't want to lose the "functionality" (haha) of the stock gauge.

SOOOO, I was thinking somewhere in the water pump housing. I haven't tore into it yet to find a spot where it will work, but are there any apparent disadvantages to mounting it there that I am missing? Any other location suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. I'm suprised that no one (well, i'm sure there's someone) has tried other areas besides the t-stat housing or various coolant hoses.

I may just try relocating mine and test the out come.
