Serial port vs USB adapter
I tuned my ECU from the first time with just a desktop PC next to my car as I donīt own a notebook. When I started thinking on buying one, I faced the fact that most of the modern units donīt have a serial port. Then I started finding out about USB-serial adapters.
Havenīt bought my notebook yet, I already bought and adapter and tested it with my desktop computer (the brand is "Noga").
Using Wolfīs 4.49 PC software, it takes 9 seconds to load the maps from the ECU to the PC using a serial port (serial port setup at 9600bps on Windows device manager).
Using the same soft and now using the USB-serial adapter, it took 56 seconds to load the same thing (this PC has USB 1.0). Then I changed to a newer PC with USB 2.0 and the time dropped to 34s (in this newer PC, the serial connection takes the same time than in the older one: 9 s).
When using the adapter I tried changing the transfer speed at both the Windows device manager and Wolfīs soft with no difference in the results.
Did anybody make similar tests? I asked Steve from Wolf about this and he told me that the adapter they sell has similar transfer speed to a direct serial port connection.
What do you think? another option would be a PCMCIA (ot whatever itīs spelled) card. What do you think of this?

I know that 38400 is its default speed, but windows setups serial ports at 9600 as default. I tested it at both 9600 and at 38400 using serial port and USB adapter without changing the results (serial port took 9 seconds at either speed and adapter took 56 and 34 respectively).
