CAS options, and Triggers

Evening,

SOme of the old timers may have seen me in and out of the forum over the years, and have always tried to check back once in a while. Put in my 2 cents if I think its applicable.

I have a irritation. (not a rash thanks)

The goddamn crank angle sensor.

I have been dealing with the finicky twitchy,, sensitive persnickity CAS on the RX-7s since I bought the original Wolf 3.0. (that is now a 3.1 thanks).

Soo yes. I have a CAS modified by Ron Foreman to run a 20B on a 3.x wolf. Have a couple of the CAS that are modified in the normal 3.X style for when I had a few of them passing through.

Here is my problem.

On my 86 sport that my 3.1 was in. After the normal amount of pissing about, I was able to stabilize the cas signal and triggering by going through all the steps we all know at this point to make them work "stock".

At some point I pulled the engine, and started converting it to a EP car. I will be running the 4.x wolf in it when I put the ECU back in with new wiring.

I put my 3.1 in my 91 RX7 daily drive with a grenade motor a friend gave me so he could see if it worked. It was a water pumper.. but I got it running decent. And work 3 miles from home so it was never an issue in the 1 time every few weeks I drove it to work.

HOWEVER.
It got a slew of signal errors at random times.. and it would just hammer and misfire all at once and peg 255 errors and misfire and stutter and then clear up. Always at idle.. or just off idle.

I dicked around with it a little.. but wasnt in a hurry cause the engine had exhaust coming out of the radiator from the first fire.

SO
I have the EP car.
I have the 91.

In the EP car I will be using the stock CAS un-modified IIRC to run the 4.x

My issue is.. I am seriously considering other options.
Like a MSD crank trigger.. but it is not going to be functional. It has 4 magnets. And if you run one without a reference pulse.. you need a dizzy to route the spark.

SO.
My question.
What options do we have for a crank trigger different than the maxda factory modified one?
I was thinking of modifiying a MSD flying mag trigger by adding a 5th magnet.. but that defeats the point. I would rather spend my time tuning the damn thing than screwing around with a finicky crank triger that has to be 95 percent or better to work.

SO... Options?
FD pulley?
Other types of crank triggers that you all may know of?

HE HE

Yeah I cant find a FD pulley in the initial searching I did. Not sure where the wheel mounts.. but I will do more searching tonight.

I think I may be able to cobble together something with a FD pulley and maybey a Haltech CAS or something.

Gonna search some more tonight.

The stock CAS is fine with a 4 and greater Wolf. But with the old 3.x it is a bit... particular, and sensitive.

My specific problem.. the 91 has wiring like the alternator run in a different route than on the 86-88 cars.. so now I need to shield the snot out of my harness I have.
Also the hall effect sensor needs to be a cootchie hair away to function correctly.
Thats fine.. but its a pita. And after screwing with it since the 3.0 was new (had one of the first ones in teh states) and getting it right.. and then every time I change cars or engines.. I have to tweak the snot out of it.. and its a pain. I am just looking for alternatives.

I am actually thinking the FD trigger might be a good choice.

Talking

Well with the right front cover and pulley/pickup it should be easy. The output would be a nice square wave too!! Less trouble I would guess but alas I have a modified 3.1 Cas on a V4 and it works great!!
Cheers
