There's a 2400 square foot shop attached to my building for rent in Santa Rosa. I don't know what your budget is, but I can find out if you're interested.

 

I would love to have you back in the area ben. We need more rotary shops around here.

 

i also could use some feedback on pricing: a standard price for engines which includes rotor housing resurfacing for less than the procedure itself or a basic price without and charge the $200 additional for it?

most engines really need it so on about 95% it is done but it's a time consuming process that i have been adding for free, while still charging what the cheapest rebuild shops charge for rebuilds so that is going to have to be modified soon.


good used rotor housings are getting scarce, new of course they are still $1400+ for a pair so the procedure is getting done quite a bit.

 

I think the resurfacing should be optional. It's an extra service so charge it as extra if needed.

 

^agreed. It is still time and wear on you/your tools so charge for it.

 

Ben... it might be to obvious to say folks miss you out here. I was spoiled having you in Yuba City but seriously... Monterrey and Santa Cruz are too far.

I recommend Fairfield, Dublin (BART access) or worse case... San Jose. You know I'm not active-duty any more so I'm down to help if you want it.

I read the other day that Pulse Performance (NZ) is building alum. housings for 3 and 4 rotor kits. Wonder if that is an alternative.

 

doooo it, it would be great to have someone in the bay area with your expertise that does full builds. most shops in the area dont even want to work on our cars.

Also, AFAIK, no one around here provides a quality housing resurface procedure. Considering the cost of new housings, $200 is a great deal.

And once you're here, I can set you up with a Dynojet for tuning days anytime you like, right in the heart of the bay. Heck, I've been doing it for people in your absence! (yup, some poor souls were desperate enough to solicit my 'help').

 

Local *and* can do resurfacing? Yes!

I sure hope Ben comes back. I have been out of the game and lurking more and more hoping to get back in it having his shop around again would be fantastic!

I do certainly understand the rent /price and smog concerns though...

If so I have an FD in need of a coolant seal replacement! Id even pull the motor and deliver. Doesn't look very promising with no updates though haha.

While I have been very happy with Rick at Ricks performance, I certainly think another quality rotary guy is much needed with plenty of business to be had up here (especially if you add in the Prius business). Living in Mill Valley there isn't anyone I trust in my area (Rick is 60 miles away) to service/fix/build my car. Have you considered an area like Petaluma or Santa Rosa to set up shop? There is nothing in the North bay. Also, as our cars are getting older and some of us (OK I'd settle for a Porsche GT3 but too ubiquitous and $$$) are not happy with any of the new cars out there, I would love to see someone set up an RX7 restorative/resto mod shop where we could get our babies completely taken down to to the shell and rebuilt with tasteful, current, upgrades to new car condition. It seems like everyone can get their Porsche, Ferrari, Jag, Vintage British marks, or American Muscle restored....but no one seems to do the Japanese resto thing. Anyone?

Because not enough people are willing to spend the money to restore a car like the FD. Maybe you are willing, and can, but your investment to spend that money on your car can't support the costs of opening a restoration shop for Japanese cars. Euro, and classic American has enough of a cult following (and $$$) to justify opening such shops. These shops need to make money, not only to survive, but to grow.
