so i got my first ticket tonight, not in the rx7 but my daily is300. got me for tint and exhaust. i originally thought the exhaust just couldnt exceed 95 decibels, which im sure my car doesnt exceed since its just an axleback. and front windows could be tinted as long as its at a certain percentage.

cop said the exhaust couldnt be touched at all. and the front windows couldnt be tinted at all either. he also marked both non correctable, which really doesnt make sense.
is there anythign i can do so i dont have to pay a shitload of money. i searched how much exhaust ticket can get and im pretty nervous about the amount haha, especially since i got cited for 2 things.

 

Both are an easy fix. Windshield tint strip is 6" max (top to bottom). Front doors need a very light tint, 30% max IIRC. Just remove the tint and use acetone to remove glue residue. Exhaust wise, did you keep the orig muffler?

 

I know they're easy to fix. I guess what I'm asking is, can't I fight it? The tint isn't dark and im pretty sure the exhaust doesn't exceed 95db.

In this country you are guaranteed the right to face your accuser. So in other words yes, you can fight any ticket. The question really is: can you win it? Lol...

Forget what the cop said. Ive gotten tinted window tickets in the past and that was always an fixable offense. But cops are known to be dicks from time to time.

Now do your self a favor and do your own research to find out if what you have violates the law. I don't keep up with the laws, but last I heard you are allowed a certain percentage of tint and after market exhausts are legal as long as they maintain a certain quietness. But I like said I do not keep up with this stuff.

So again find out if you are legal and if you are: Then go to court the day that it lists on your ticket and plea not guilty. You will be given a trial date where you will face the officer and you will be given a chance to plea your case. Bring proof. Proof as citing the law and actual proof that you meet it. Bring any less than that, and you are guaranteed to lose.

 

Calif. Law says no tinting of front windows period. Most cops won't hassle you as long as they can still see you in the car with the windows up. That means 30% or less. But as already said, some cops are dicks and the younger you are, the more likely they will hassle you.

 

ah alright if anything ill just try to fight for the exhaust if the law is still the same (under 95db). never really cared for the tint though but it was put on by previous owner and didnt bother me enough to take it off. guess imma go with that fishbowl life! still stupid he marked them non correctable though -_-

 

The cop doesn't have the last word. If you are in violation, then remove the window tint and when you go to court ask the judge to change the non correctable infraction into a correctable offense. The worst thing that can happen is that he/she says no.

Again, I can't stress enough that you bring some kind of proof that the audible level of the car is within legal limits. Don't just go in and say that your car is below 95dB because you know so. Evidence is key.

Worst case scenario, if you can't get proof then you turn it on the cop on how exactly he determined that the car was too loud. His expert ear is not submissible in court. But it is still very risky because many times judges will side with the officers if given the opportunity. This is a last ditch effort and I really do not recommend it and should be avoided.

 

Calif law says no tint allowed on the windshield, 70% for the front windows, and you can fricken paint the back ones if you want. The percentage is how much light the tint lets through, so the lower the number the darker the tint.

The exhaust law is a little more...gray. Basically, what I'd do is tell the judge that your stock exhaust is gone/broken/stolen, and you can't find an oem replacement. Then take it to the ref and prove that you've got both cats, your decibel level is below 95, and the exhaust fits correctly.

Don't worry, I hear you haha I know how to read and do my homework. I'm not stupid enough to go to court empty handed. The reason I made the thread is because the cop said I can't touch the exhaust while I thought it just couldn't exceed a limit. Same with tint, I searched and found various answers including no tint at all and the 70% one that was just posted.

Was just curious if laws changed at all the past couple years.

Wow, Somewhere along the way Calif. changed the law to allow light tinting. I wasn't aware. I had my new Mazda 3 done in light (85% light in). The next step up was medium (65%) which would be illegal according to the 70% light through requirement.

 

Let's not forget bulletproof film. I think the law does allow that 😊
