Wangan Runs in LA
Among drag racing, drifting, and grip runs i am happy to say that CA has it all when it comes to Motorsports, but as a JDM enthusiast, and even more a Rotary fanatic, i am sad to say that the one thing that is missing is the constant attendance to local spots for midnight meets and highway racing. In Tokyo the C1, or Wangan, has been a race track for decades, and the many rest stops along the way have become a meeting spot for the many cars and enthusiasts that are looking for a less structured, more "down to the basics" car experience. My preposition is for us a whole to find and map routes along the intricate and beautiful highway systems of CA, make meeting points along the routes in which people are meeting, making a grid for us as a whole to navigate along the coast experiencing other like minded racers and their machines. We have a passion for a very unique sport that allows for the most diverse human experience possible, but we close our sport off to the local meets and races, I say we take our sport to the next level and travel the roads one state at a time, racing and/or rallying from each other's home towns, always opening our lots to the new enthusiasts and smashing the throttle to rival challengers.
Post your thoughts and comments and lets work together to bring the raw nature of our machines where the States have never seen!

If you are asking to make meets on a laid out route then that's not a bad idea. But if you are asking to sanction freeway racing you are asking for trouble.
My two cents start of with meets this isnt japan (I lived there 3yrs) what has been done there for 50 + yrs won't be done here in a few years.
If you are really interested in doing such meet. I suggest you making a complete map lay out. Then find suitable spots.
For the love of god don't ask to "street race" or this tread will be terminated.

Not my intention to sanction highway street racing, it is simply an attempt at taking our passion to a new age, one in which we take our interest far and wide. If some take it personal as an invitation to risk their lives then i apologize for the confusion. None the less, my idea stands; I will begin by mapping a route and spots for people to meet, all of which will be posted and will be open to all who decide to join. If criticism is to come my way Ill take it as a way to improve my over all plan. Also I am glad to see that a strong reaction against street racing is met by my fellow users of this forum, it makes me see how fortunate we are to be surrounded by honest people who love the sport for what it is and don't find the easy way out and dishonest way to use our machines.
Anyway, thanks for the feed back, any way to improve the idea is appreciated.

I've actually thought about setting up small meets at rest stops, but the nearest ones are out on I-5 & out of the way.
It's cool how they do it in Japan such as Daikoku Futo, but as Alex Rodriguez said, they've been doing it for decades. For the Japanese, it's nothing out of the ordinary.
Also...you have to remember that at rest stops or point-of-interest off the highway, that becomes CHP country, where they have full jurisdiction to enforce whatever laws they think we're breaking. All they really need is "probable cause" to pop our hoods. (not trying to spark a debate on this, just going from what I've heard from friends in the force)
Not trying to shoot you down, because I would LOVE to see something like this done (minus the racing part), but it's just something you have to take into consideration
If you do get something going, let me know. I'm more than happy to support the cause & bring fellow rotary owners with me. I'm all about meeting new people in the community!

Many thanks for the information, I was aware of the police being a problem but i neglected the fact that all they need is suspicion for us to be guilty, it is of the utmost importance that we are able to enjoy our freedom especially when we are not braking the law. I will do some research and some field work to see where we would be most safe from scrutiny and where we can show off our machines. Thank you for the support and the ideas, they are the backbone of our project.

I am expressing my idea of having many rest stops and meeting point along the many highways of CA, where, as drivers, we can move freely and share our passion for our machines among many other enthusiasts without having to organize meets, places where we can simply show up and encounter many other like minded poeple.
We have been having fairly regular meets that include drives then food up here in the bay area and running to Santa Cruz.
This is a cool idea. We are always juggling with the logistics of people being in different parts of a rather large bay area. Some hardcore guys just go to where ever the meets are but many don't want to venture far from home turf. Probably due to our cars thirsty nature. lol.
So if we run many concurrent or rather sequential meets in such a way that you could drive from one meet to the next and do all of them or just a leg or two...
This is cool!
We will see if we can make it happen in the bay.

Generating a lot of buzz is what is important atm, the more people hear about this happening the more momentum it will build and the sooner it will happen! I personally think that a "rally" type of movement would be the way to go, per say, many rest stops along a pre-determined route, among which many cars are all ready meeting and moving in multiple packs along the route, grouping with different people and going to different distances. It is still a first draft and will need a lot of tailoring but with the right drive behind it we as a whole could make this huge!
wangan run? =] im down. topped out my mr2 turbo at 160 mph on the 91 at 3 in the morning. I used to do it on regular basis but I didn't want to risk getting a fat ticket anymore. All I can say is be careful and trust your intuition. My intuition saved me from jail time a couple times.
Invest in a radar detector and dont be stupid by doing it when there are a lot of cars. You also need good tires as well.
As much as WE ALL want to see life at 170mph
I dont see this happening at all

what you suggested is straight up dumb and is an accident waiting to happen. I don't condone street racing because it's retarded. Concrete barriers, guard rails, light posts were not engineered to absorb impact. There are no run off zones and all you got out there to save your life is maybe those water jugs. If you want to top out your car for max speed you can check out shift s3ctor. They had an air strip time attack in central cali.

stop being so damn cheap and just go to a track

The way he SUGGESTED it was a bit doltish. CHP could take a look at this thread, then pictures of your cars, and put 1 + 1 together. Freeway cruises around the city with pit stops for bathroom breaks and such would have sounded better. Nothing wrong with a relaxing cruise around your lovely city. If people do other things, then that's on them. That's when mob mentality comes in handy to discourage such things.
