transmission problems with my friends acura...

my coworker has a acura '2000 TL. The model with the manual/automatic transmission. Well evidently theres been alot of trouble with the transmissions in these cars but the delership is telling him that he needs a whole new transmisson, at the cost of about $5000!! I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight to pass along to him since he has nowhere to turn for help. I guess in the manual trans. mode the car shifts and operates just fine. But the car will not shift in the auto trans. mode. Is there any ballpark theories to what may possibly be the problem and possibly a price if I'm not already asking too much thanks.

PS: any suggestions on a good shop to have the work done would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

probably a fubared sensor or something....if it shifts in sport mode but not in auto, then the problem is not with the tranny IMO....
