towing a non op car in cali?
towing a non op car in cali?
ok, I recently converted my street fb into a full racecar (not passing smog helped that). But I was told that I had to get a permit to tow a non op car on the street (even on a full flat bed trailer). But I went to the DMV and he said the only permit are single day ones. That seems like a lot of work (as I race at least 1-2 weekends a month).

The one day pass is to DRIVE it on the streets. And then it still needs to be road worthy (ie headlights, taillights, windshield etc, etc)
If it is being towed, you are fine.
The trailer you are using needs to be registered, but not the car.

If its non op then the wheels aren't supposed to touch the ground because you havn't paid the road tax to be able to drive it on the street.
All four wheels up any type of trailer that registered itself is legal. I have also towed cars very long distances on tow bars without getting pulled over but it is illegal.

Same here my car is no longer street legal, and not only that im always towing cars with expired tags on flat-beds...what you were told is new to me i have never heard of that...
A car that has no registration, tags, or expired tags at that can not be driven or parked on the street, but if your towing there is no problem...
Your fine...don't trip
Or do off road registration...thats what im going to do as i register the car as track car only...

The person at the DMV also suggest "junking" the car (no wacky, you are not getting my car =) but it would remove the car from the dmv data base, but it sounds like a pretty bad idea as well. Sounds like I should be fine just a non op since I have a full flat bed trailer.

wow dude your putting to much thinking into this...as long as the car is not being driven on the street or parked your fine...you just have to tow it...thats what flat beds and dollys are for...
if you have your own trailer you are fine, but if you are trying to have a tow service company tow it they might ask you for a moving permit in order for them to tow it.my friend tried having his rx7 towed by his AAA insurance and the tow truck driver said he cant tow the car without a moving permit.
i know for a fact the that you dont need to get a permint to tow on a trialer as long as you are not driving on the street if your driving the street the you will have a prolbem than thats when thay will mess with you

sometimes AAA will get there and say NO way if your non op. its happend to me. if the wheels touch the ground when your towing it. than it needs to have a day pass or needs to be reg'd. if your on a flat bed the wheels dont touch the city streets and your A ok. the city owns the street if you dont touch it your ok. sometimes u get cool AAA guys and they will tow a rx7 with no tags no plates and no engine.
not true...never heard of that...yeah the city owns the steet...But if someone/he/she is junking a car that needs no reg or one day pass there is no need for it...P.O.V with a P.O.T does not need a permit with a registered trailer...I just towed 4 cars this weekend none of which are registered twice a cop was behind me and didn't do anything...Go figure...You guys read to much into this issue
I got my SA towed to my house while it was non-op for 2 years. Bought it in a different city, about 30min-1hour drive, and it made it there no problem. I think if you call just a regular tow guy, they will usually do it. Work is work.
if you have a truck of your own, a car that needs to be towed, just rent a trailer from u haul... $60.00 for the flat bed $40.00 for the dolly...save yourself more then a hundred $100.00 in the end and you don't get charged mileage...
I just got a chance to post these pics of me towing my no registered no op car that has not been registered since 2004...on my own trailer... and that same day i towed three other cars that were not registered either...
