Street Legal Honda dirtbikes? (California)

I've been interested in supermoto for a few years now and I recently got a buddy of mine into it too. He's got a bit more money than me and just bought a brand new Suzuki DRZ-400SM (the *******)

Naturally I'm pretty jealous, because his bike is just too much fun to ride.

Now, I'm too cool to ride a Suzuki (not really, but hes already got one and I'd rather ride a Honda anyway)

So my question is: whats a pretty recent year model of Honda dirt bike I can street-legalize? I wish (but doubt) any of the CRF's are street legal... are XR400's still possibly legal?

I'm not sure about the legality rules, but I know for a fact that XR400s can be legalized with only adding turn signals. CRFs have the same stuff as XR400s though, a headlight and a taillight. I don't know why they wouldn't be legal to ride, unless its some emissions issue, but CRFs are still 4 strokes.

I've personally got an XR400 and a CRF250X in Rancho Cucamonga I'm trying to sell if you're interested.

I know CRFs aren't capable of being legalized (although Troy Lee has a gray area CRF450 through dealer plates and all that)

So I'm guessing my best bet is an XR400, send me some info and pics on yours =)

I don't know what the laws are in your state, but I managed to get plates for a 2002 YZ 250 (2-stroke) in PA. All it took was a little research/money/luck.

I would compare California's emissions laws to Germany (around 1942)

If it is not already registered with the DMV for road legal use, you can not make it legal.

2002 was the last year in Cali you were allowed to ad lights to make it legal.
Just wait until they start doing emmisions on bikes in 2009, then most manufacturers are gonna pull out of Cali. Or just make our bikes cost WAY more.

We have had to do emissions on bikes in Phoenix forever and they still sell plenty of them for no more than anywhere else. You wont notice a thing other than an extra pain in the *** to register every year.

the old(er) XR600's can easily be retrofitted to be street legal, most are already registered for street use. mid to late 90's models were reliable and had more torque then you could ever need, aka roll on wheelies in 4th gear.

i used to have a '84 XL500R that i punched out and put a cam and full exhaust on, it was pretty beastly heavy but it had just as much torque as my friends '94 XR600 with supertrapp exhaust and intake. my friends at the autoshop at deanza used to gawk when i would ride a wheelie down the student parking lot during class change and weave around cars, go through stops and dodge students while going the whole length of the parking lot on one wheel. that bike was the most balanced bike i ever rode and i think my best one was about 1.5 miles maintaining it in 3rd gear. the higher the gear the easier it is to maintain.

I'd like to keep it under 600 for weight reasons, so im thinking a 400. Man i wish the CRFs could be legalized.

Me too, I would love to ride my CRF250X around town.

I didn't know that the last year you could add lights and it be legal in CA was 2002, interesting.
