Smog Test Help
Hey guys,
Well, I failed my smog test today (by only 4 PPM!), wanted some help. Yes, I did read the F.A.Q. and search, but my question is:
I have high HC and Low CO/NO, what's the "run-in converter" and what do I do with it? Also, how do I lean out the A/F?
I recently did a full tune up, however, the car has been sitting for almost a month, would it benifit from an oil change?
Thanks for the help guys!

Change the oil. It's a good idea to have all the "tune-up" parts fresh or at leasy know they're not crap.
How old is you EGR valve?
There's a vacum hose you can unhook (and maybe plug, I can't remember) that will force the air pump air to dump down to the cat...that could help. Be sure to hook that all back up because that can damage your cat long tearm.
You can also try dumping in a couple bottles of HEAT or some other concoction designed to get the water out of gas. They're almost 100% alcahol.
Was your car HOT before you tested? It's a good idea to drive a few miles in 3rd or 4th on the way there...
Bottom line, something's wrong and you can spend a lot of time, money, and emotional energy trying to track down just what the problem is.
Good luck and Godspeed.

No the car wasn't hot when it got tested, the test place was literally a block away...
Thanks for the info, I'll probably end up doing everything you said! You wouldn't happen to have an illustration for the EGR thing would you? I'll search...
As for the new cat, I would probably do it if it didn't require practically getting a whole new exhuast. The previous owners welded the cat to the pre-cat and cat-back...
Peace

really dont need an EGR, but do do a full tune up and drive the car around at a high rpm/load for a while before doing the test. Also if you can leave the car before you do the test would be great. Get that cat super hot

We pass the 15 RPM on the HC 50 vs 88,

the Max !!!
So be careful...need to find the right balance.

Just too much NO, and either your EGR is bad or your mixture is off or you have a bad cat.

If he was just off by 4ppm and the car was cold that was the problem. If he had a worn out cat or other issues being that the car was not even to operating temp the Hc numbers should of been way higher. Starting the car and driving 1 block away. The AFM had to be rich dumping the unburned fuel into a stone cold catalytic converter. With what you gave as a reading that once at operating temp and the cat hot working like it supposed to be you should in theory blow right thru. That is unless once your at operating temp that you don't have any other issues. One of the most important things about going thru the emission test is to make sure the car is at full operating temp and that you don't shut it off.
