Okay, so I'm still paying on my FD, making payments to the guy, but, with me leaving the state, how will that work as far as title/registration? I'm moving back to Montana, we don't have emissions testing there, so does the title holder have to have it smogged before I take the car back to montana? or can I just w/ a bill of sale, get it registered at home?

 

Bill of sale aint gonna cut it. Its either you have a pink slip OR the seller has to sign another form for lost pink slip.

 

yeah, I actually called the MT DMV (very nice people unlike down here) and I have to have him put a lein on the car, so It's on it's way to getting sorted out.... just don't know if he has to have the car smogged if it leaves the state....

 

If I were you, just to be on the safe side, talk to the prior owner and have him transfer the title to your name but with him as the lienholder. As usual, he will be holding the pink slip which he can sign off or release once your loan is paid in full. And be sure to have a promissory note so he cant change the loan amount down the line. Money makes people stupid. I recently expereinced that...and no its not me.

 

yeah, it's should be cool though, he's been really great through the whole process, even when I was having money problems, but then again, he's buying an Aston Martin, so I don't think he needs to worry about feeding his belly....
