sell for 20?
i met with guy who was interested in my rx7. i took him for a drive in my rx7...couldn't really get on the car since it's still in the break-in period. we get back to the parking lot, and he asks 'can i drive the car'...to which i said 'i understand u want to drive a car you are thinking about buying...but, seeing as how the engine is still in the break-in period, and we're on a busy street, i don't feel comfortable with letting people drive my car. also, i've gotten quite a few tirekickers who want joyrides, so i'm not willing to let people drive my car.'
so he got out, walked around the car some more, inspected it again, and at this point, i told him 'i better get going...it was nice meeting ya...take your time and think about it and if you like the car, gimme a call'...and he responded 'when you let me drive the car, we can work out a deal'...i didnt say anything back, i was just like 'whatever' and hopped back in and drove off.
he got into his truck and followed me on the highway. he was a couple cars back and one lane over to my left (in the fast lane) but he wouldn't pass me. he then calls me saying 'thanks for coming out to meet with me...i know you spent a lot of money on the car...would you take 20k cash for it?' and i replied "i'll have to think about that...let me send you a pdf showing you a list of the modifications, car history, and carfax report...then maybe you could adjust your offer accordingly and we can go from there"
so, i'm supposed to call him back and get his email address. my question is...should i call him? another question is, should i stick to my asking price, or counteroffer? i'm not in a rush to sell the car...i dont need the money...i seriously doubt he could take an rx7 and build the car exactly to my car and save any money compared to my asking price.
anyways, just wanted to know your guys' thoughts.

how much were you asking? personally i wouldnt except anything less than than 23k. if people keep letting themselves get lo balled on their cars thats going to bring down the value of all our cars. dont except anything less than what you are asking.

thanks speedking for the compliments and for posting the info/link on the car. i should note that the engine was replaced in august by Ivan and has approx 400 miles on it so far. i'm not in a desperate need for the money, so i'm in no rush to sell the car. i just don't drive it and so i figure the car should be driven and owned by someone who would appreciate the car. anyways, thanks for the advice...i'll stick to the asking price. and feel free to let anyone know about my car if they are in the market for one.

if u dont need the money keep the car. but if you expect to sell the car you can realistically only get about 19-21k the way your car is. 20k is a pretty solid offer for the car if you ask me.

thanks for the compliments roto and gen3...and you are probably right mazdaspeed...it's just a shame to sell it for 20, since i know it would cost so much more to start from scratch and modify a stock car. oh well. i don't need the money, and i'm in no rush. i just dont drive the car anymore. maybe one day someone will come along and figure it's worth it and buy it from me.
insomniac, pm your number...i had incoming calls that bumped your # out of my recent phone log...let's get that upper turbo piping made.

looks like it's worth $20k to me, 25 seems like a pipe dream. with FDs selling as low as $10k, I think people will want to buy a cheaper one and work on it themselves if your price is over 20. JMO.

He is just trying to get you to come down a bit. Tell him to walk towards you and you'll walk towards him and somewhere in the middle you have a car deal. just walk slower than he does. Don't be offended, this is just normal negotiation for a car. If you like cars.......get used to it.

thanks for the thoughts...good advice jhammons...i agree that negotiation is all part of the dance.
yea, one could pickup an FD for $10k, but to replace the motor, that would eat up almost $5k (if you had it done by someone else), which leaves $5k for other mods...or let's say a low mileage FD can be bought for $10k, that leaves $10k for mods...I could show receipts that would easily eclipse that amount. oh well, like i said earlier, i'm in no rush to sell the car. with that said, i don't think i'll undersell the car. if noone wants it, that's fine by me.
another update: the guy called again today. i told him i won't sell the car for 20k. he says he wants to drive the car. he was in town this wknd and told me he had cash in hand (25k). he then said he'll let me hold onto the cash if i let him drive the car, and he said he understands me being worried about someone driving the car like a bat out of hell. his friend called me too and supposedly they want to arrange a meeting to check the car out again. his friend would drive the car back to LA if he decided to buy the car.
i don't feel comfortable if someone gave me 25k in cash. a friend told me that sometimes a buyer will pay the seller the entire amount in cash, just to follow the seller around and rob and take the cash back. i guess it *could* happen. are cashier checks just as good as cash?
insomniac, i'll call you tomorrow. see if the shop can fab it quickly before wknd arrives.

cashier checks are NOT as good as cash. a cashier check is only as good as a regular check. it can be CANCELED at anytime or can easilly forged. the only sure way to know if a buyers money is good is to go to their bank and directly transfer funds from their account into yours.

I'd rather be dealing with a Lending institution than a guy with Cash. Who deals in cash??? especially 25k???? Is he going to give you the cash in a brown paper sack or a black breif case?? Starting to sound sketchy to me. Of course they could just be laundering money which is of no concern of yours........just buy something quick if you take the money.
