Registering out of state car...

Hi All,

I'm looking at buying another 3rd gen and I have found two I like out of state. I've been looking at the DMV and found that the cars need to be 50 state legal, but I can't find any info in FSM or on the froum that indicates if the 93's and 94's are 50 state?

Thanks,

Matt

It no longer matters what state the car was originally sold in. If you can smog it in CA, you can register it here.

3. I am buying a vehicle from Out-of-State, will it pass the California smog check? back to top
It's true, there is a difference with California legal and Federal legal emissions requirements. And, for the most part California is stricter. However, a vehicle which is equipped with at least the Federally required emissions components, will pass a California smog inspection, as long as the vehicle's exhaust emissions fall within California's limits.

'93 federal i believe did not have an EGR, california models did. of course most smog techs bypass it because the EGR is inacessible anyways. you should be perfectly fine even with an **** smog tech. the evap system is also an exception on the FD since it is unrealistic to check the underside of the car for a visual inspection of components/function.

one smog tech did check the evap system, but he was cursing the whole time. not a single one has ever tested the EGR function, most couldn't even find it.

+1 I hear non cali '93s did not have EGR, but by 94-95 they all did. Pretty sure that is the only difference.
