Was it rebuilt to stock specs? What are your mods?

unless there's a CARB # on that air filter....IT WILL NOT PASS THE VISUAL INSPECTION.

it may pass the BAR97 ASM test...but it will entirely fail from that intake

Yeah you should pass, no problem. But if you're concerned, make some calls before you get checked. Some places will give re-tests for free if you fail the first time, and some give discounts. Others will charge you full price though, so do your research.

How many miles since the rebuild?

Well it depends. Did he mean he just slapped a K&N Filter in his airbox? Because thats what I interpreted it as.

Ok, you'll pass the visual test then. You might want to put some more miles on the rebuild before getting it smogged.

usually people throw on the cone intake system. my bad for jumping the gun. shouldn't be a problem towards the visual inspection.

No, you're right, I'm glad you brought that up. We both had different perspectives as to what the original poster said, so I'm glad you brought it up. No "my bad"s from you!

Yeah, non-CARB certified air intakes are probably the #1 most popular emissions-fail device installed on California cars. Do you work at a smog shop?

Gold Shield station i'm trying to save monies to open my own test & repair station. that's why i sold my FD. it was either sell the benz, kick the gambling addiction, or sell the FD. choice made through critical thinking

Well I'm sure somewhere between the Mercedes, the RX-8, and the EVO (IX is my favorite by the way), you can cope with the loss of the FD

Very cool by the way. Hey, I've got some high flow cats that a rotary shop put on for me, but I don't know the brand so I don't know if they're CARB certified. Obviously theres no CARB sticker on them, but do you think I'll pass the visual based on that alone?

i HIGHLY regret selling the FD. especially comparing it to the evo9. i love the handling, but it's just way too damn slow. turbo rotaries can run circles around me on the freeway. The benz is just my vegas mobile...gotta roll in status! RX8...gotta keep it real and stay rotary

as long as there's a cat on there, it's fine. on OBD-II cars, they MUST be OBD-II compliant cats or we flag them.

Ok, thanks for the help buddy. At least you still have a rotary. You could always go back and sell the EVO to buy an FD.

Yeah I'm with you. I'll be picking up an FD, although I know for sure mine will be years from now. But I definitely will be

Smog place I went to, I had to school on how to find the charcoal canister (it's inside the air cleaner lid) and which plug wire to monitor timing from.

you can get an RPM signal from the battery.... n00bs must've been a "test only" facility huh?

Yep. They ended up just using an inductive loop about 2 feet long, draped over the ignition/battery area. First time I'd seen that trick, but it got it done.

Nice guys, though. I stood 'em to a couple beers after I passed, I was so happy.

the "TEST ONLY" facilities are known for lack of knowledge. they're usually the techs that one to a 30day course in getting their smog license. often frowned upon, but good people in the end. we often wish those facilities had knowledge & experience as Test & Repair/Gold Shield stations.
