Thumbs down The Police State of Riverside!

What's the deal with Riverside?? I saw a news clip last week about them having roadside inspections that are profiling and impounding cars w/o EO #s on mods. This was basically a hysterical reaction because 2 morons killed an innocent while they were racing on the freeway. Now Riverside has labeled every car enthusiast is an irresponsible idiot! The word from the authorities was (loosely) "You can have a hobby, but don't try to drive it on the street!" Time for all motorheads to boycott Riverside!

What's so tough to grasp?? I'm not talking about a hairbrain idea like a "gas out". When you have a choice, do business elsewhere. A lot of people are real myopic when it comes to economics. Take for instance the mass invasion of the Whittier cruising scene (probably before most forum members were born...). The residents whined and moaned about kids cruising 1 or 2 nights a week. "...the traffic's horrible..." "...it's hard to find parking..." So the police invaded, 4 per cruiser, hassling the hot rodders. So we stopped going to Whittier. Restaurants went out of business, Bob's Big Boy closed their car hop service, etc... The residents suddenly realized these "kids" were spending lots of money in their city! Too late! :-P

My biggest objection is being profiled. If I'm driving a nice car with legal mods, why do I have to submit to be hassled & detained because 2 morons broke the law in a highly visible way? Just because I'm a car enthusiast, I'm a criminal??

You don't have to go to into a voting booth to have your voice heard... another example, the end of the national 55 MPH speed limit. The silent majority voted with their right foot.

You're the type of person that gives the police a bad reputation... (comment based on your posts in other threads as well) You're paid to enforce the law, not to profile, not to harass tax paying citizens...

A car enthusiast is not a ricer. My wife & I, my 2 daughters, their boyfriends, my best friend and his sons, Jay Leno, Barry Meguiar, etc, are all car enthusiasts. None of us are "ricers"! Our actions can make a difference. We can even put pressure on those in control "of the money", to eliminate jobs for biased police officers with a chip on their shoulder.

Above quote is from Jes.

Why do people have to go thru check points that are doing random checking for drunk drivers? Because there are idiots out there that have no brains and the same goes for the people that do street racing on a regular basis. The police don't make those decisions. It is made at high city levels or in alot of cases at the State and Goverment levels. Police officers are doing exactly what they are being told to do. Why? Because it is a job and if it is in their job description they are expected to enforce it.
I'm sure that their are a percentage of Police officers that are go overboard but that's just the way it is.

By the way, I grew up in Riverside when cruising was very popular.
After I left and came back after about 3 years the cruising had stopped because there was too much vandalism going on in the lots where we used to park. So you can blame most of this crap on the new generation of young adults. Then you can go further and blame the parents for not teaching the previous generations what is acceptable and what is not.

Give me a ******* break. You don't know me. Don't label me, it seems like you don't like people labeling you either. Ask any West Coaster that has met me and you will be surprised.

Enforcing vehicle codes is part of my job. If you don't like the codes that the state has, then move the **** out.

Ricers are some of the biggest car enthusiasts I know. They live cars just like the snobby old guys that cruise around with Jay Leno. And guess what, car enthusiasts street race and illegally modify their cars too. Should it ok for the old man with a vette to run no cats? Should I only ticket the less fortunate people with RX7's and Civics? I don't harass anybody, I do my job. Plain and simple.

yes there are some (not all) cops that do have it out for import cars but Fu is right its not all of them. you trying to label all cops as import haters is just like you getting label as a "ricer" its the same thing.

Pomona just had two weeks where every person who was possibly modified got pulled over. My friend got pulled over 3 times in a single day because he looks like a racer (he drives an integra). My neighbor's sister got pulled over and had her hood popped while driving her stock civic. I got an exhaust ticket and my exhaust is very quiet. The officers said they were pulling everyone over because people complained that cops werent doing anything about street racing. You literally couldnt drive 2 city blocks without seeing someone pulled over with their hood up.

I 100% agree that idiots racing on the street should get the book thrown at them, car impounded/crushed, and anything else that can be done to them. I dont agree with cops pulling people over who are minding their own business just to check under thier hoods and give out citations for anything and everything they can find wrong with the car because they fit the description of a street racer.

haha you guys have it easy in louisiana they are about to pass a law where if you street race you get up to a 1,000 fine and jail time of up to 1 to 2 years.

i also live with in 30 minutes of New orleans in a corrupt parish where hanging out a local park gets swat on us becuase "they heard" street racing in the parking lot? this was amazing to us since we had just gotten there and we all had no clue to what was going on. they said we were all under arrest becuase of these claims. a few of us said we refuse and they called for back up a few of us actually called the police department. i talked to the sherif who is corrupt him self and had to be explained to that the cops got a report of a group of cars fitting or discruption were street racing. i replied with i want a copy of this report. he said no. i said well isnt it my right if a file has been charged against me? he said no and hangs up the phone and swat leaves. the next saturday there was a sign that says no one is allowed in after 10 pm. this is a case where police are trageting people like us. we do all of our racing at the track. i hate louisiana street cops.

Yeah im sure all this pulling people over by profiling the way their car looks will have a great impact on decreasing the amounts of street racing.. I think i see more unmodified cars racing than modified.

I know lets start a war on street racing. Im sure it will be as succesful as the war on drugs and the war on terror. Since every crack head that gets busted decreases the amount of drug use across the state.

Once again its just the local enforcment agencies making a media example and at the same time increasing city revenue. Their cause will result in zero impact, on somthing that has been going on since the invention of the automobile.

I expect nothing less from the southern californian sheriffs of rottinham.

oops, I'm sorry, I must have profiled you! Pretty annoying when you're on the other end, isn't it?

I didn't say anything against the CA VC... My comments were about profiling all car enthusiasts as automatically being criminals. This is America, I'm exercising my right of free speech. If you can't deal with that, leave the country!!

You apparently have some pre-conceived prejudices... snobby old guys drive Corvettes, the less fortunate drive Rx7's? IMHO I think you still have a lot to learn about people & cars in general...

I would hope that you and your fellow officers do your job on probable cause, not on what someone drives or what they look like... If you do, good for you. Unfortunately there are some that don't.

So here I am to break it down for all of you fellas. First off, Louisiana must have a horrible education system.

So here's the deal. Don't blame cops because they're doing their jobs. It's been covered so many times that it's getting annoying, but here it is one more time: COPS ARE LIKE ANY OTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE. SOME ARE ******** AND SOME ARE COOL. YOU USUALLY ONLY REMEMBER THE ********.

If you don't like something, do something about it. If you just want to vent, then say so. Asking people to boycott an entire city is just dumb. Let's just say that it does work. Businesses close down, and by some miraculous work of God, people think it's because the "car enthusiasts" stopped hanging out in Riverside. How fair is it that some guy who put his entire life into his business loses it because you didn't like how some cop treated you? That's just dumb.

If you feel so strongly about this, do something that'll make a positive difference. Write letters to your congressman, police department, local news stations, etc. Asking us to punish other law abiding citizens and bad mouthing cops is just plain dumb. If your reply is that you know that it won't make a difference, you either haven't tried, or you haven't tried enough.

One last thing. Most likely, the reason that a "car enthusiast" is in Riverside is because he lives there. If it makes you feel better, I have absolutely no plans to go to Riverside. I won't spend any money there, either. In effect, I'm boycotting Riverside. Happy now?

You've obviously never been profiled. Back in the 90's we used to get pulled over all the time for DWY. Just because you haven't been pulled over for your car doesn't mean that other people aren't being profiled.

Roadside inspection sounds ghey...I don't drive like an ***, but if I HAD to drive by that road and was inspected I'd lose my car That sounds dumb considering our local highschool has 3 new vettes that some rich stuck up kid's parent's bought them and I see those vettes racing around town all the time. If they were sunject to the roadside inspection nothing bad would go their way. Bone stock 500 hp
