persistant coolant leak
persistant coolant leak
'88 convertible, all stock.
SO! My ongoing problem with my new 7.
I bought it, and the coolant was low, every day and every night. I had to check it at least twice daily to make sure the radiator had fluid.
My first assumption was that I had a thirsty engine with a bad coolant seal.
But then I realised that the coolant wasn't going anywhere, it was just filling up the overflow, and not going back into the radiator. I was literally using a turkey baster to put the antifreeze back into the radiator.
Eventually my stupid *** finally figured out that it just MIGHT be a leak in the coolant system.
This came after my radiator blew one day on the way to work. Stock radiator, the plastic at the top cracked. A paycheck later I ran out and slapped in a new 'all metal' radiator. And THEN I noticed that the coolant wasn't so low each time I checked it. Low, but less low.
Another problem I noticed is that my S4's temp gauge showed it in the middle, at times a bit higher, I remembered that s4's run 'colder' on the gauge.... I wouldn't be surprised if the thermostat was from Autozone. So I got a thermostat and two new caps from Mazda trix and slapped 'm on. In the process the ******' filler cap nozzle on the thermostat housing decided to crack and leak all over the place too. ******* old plastic. But the thermostat did it's job and the needle pointed at about one third on the temp gauge.
So yeah, after replacing the nozzle with one from a junked engine in my garage, things seemed fine. Coolant filled in the morning, drove to work. Checked it before I left work, and my eyes were wide, the radiator was STILL FULL! I drove home with a smile on my face, thinking my problem was finally gone.
But no, the one day of no coolant leak was just that one. I double check still every time and it's low. But now even less low.
So enough of my bitching.
My next step is too replace the hoses, i'm waiting for them to ship, Kragen didn't have 'm on shelf.
I don't even remember what my damn question was, I got lost in bitching. So leave your comment.
