New Guy from Arizona
Hey guys, I found a 87 RX7 Non Turbo for 500 dollars on craigslist. It runs and everything but the engine has a timing problem. I'm not sure how to time an RX7 motor or how much it costs. Also was wondering if there's anything else I should look out for when buying one besides the usual car stuff?

An excellent guide. When I was shopping I printed it out and took it with me to check with. I even faxed it to my brother-in-law so he with no rotary experience could check out a car for me.

any idea how much it cost to get the engine lined up? I never messed with a rotary before so I'm not sure how to do it and prefer to have someone who has done it before do it. Another thing is when I called up about it the guy sounds like he's in his 40's or 50's. I'm kinda not sure if he knows how to line up the motor.

^^ I am not sure what you mean by "lined up". Do you mean "Timed" probably so. Here is your trouble. Once you opened the hood of you newly aqcuired Rotory.....you now have twice as much experience/knowledge of 98% of the Mazda mechanics at the dealerships posses.
Best thing for you do do is to learn, quick. Besides there is one 10mm bolt to loosen and you can move the CAS (Distributor) and time it yourself. you need a $10 timing light and the FSM (Factory service Manual) found online in the 2nd Gen Technical Archive threads.
Do yourself another favor. Go to the 2nd gen section and read The entier FAQ section. Then read the Archives....every last one of them. Then next week after your done with the Archives you be ready to re-read the FAQ and then re-read the archives. You think I'm kidding................You think I am kidding...........
Once you set foot into a repair shop or god forbid a Mazda dealership, you'll be hearing my words in your head like a bad McDonalds jingle.
A.) It's good that you have a Rotary
B.) Its bad that you fear it
C.) It's good that you have found the 7 club
D.) It's bad that you haven't found the search button
E.) It's bad that you have chosen to post in the west section.......The beligerants are the shapes you see of there lurking in the corner. They sent me over here to try to get you run....they took pity on you for some reason. Your kinda like that Cat in Shrek II, you know the real cute look the cat gives

Most of my post was tongue in cheek humor.....however [i]most[i/] of it was me trying to truly help you.
take my advice about the FAQ and the Archive in the 2nd gen section.
The belligerents aren't jack asses, just a bunch of guys that do get along. beleive me, if you need help most will be first to lend a hand. Except Noluck............. (yes that was a dig)
If you see a car in the OC area I'd love to go look at it with you.
