MY $3500 Goodyear Nightmare
MY $3500 Goodyear Nightmare
In preparation for a road trip to Vegas on the weekend of June 18 I took my car into Goodyear to have the alignment check to insure that the car was in spec since there was a slight pull to the left and that I had just lowered the car. I walked out of the store with the Assistant Manager to do the normal information gathering and was told that I would need to pop my hood so they could have access to the top of my shocks so as to be able to perform the service. This wasn't a problem and since my hood was secured with hood pins at the nose I would show them how they worked. So they Assistant Manager directed me in moving my car around to their rack and stopping right before it. After doing so I exited my car and was instructed to pop the hood with the Assistant Manager standing about 12 inches from me. I was then asked to drive the car onto the car rack and to do so I had to lower the hood. Once it was on the rack I went and walked back inside and was away from the car until they asked what I wanted to do with part of my alignment, whereby they walked me through there shop which there are signs that say I can't do that to show me the results. I then informed them of what I wanted and walked back to the waiting area. To finish off my service they pulled my car out drove it around to the other side to fill it with nitrogen in the tires. By this point at least FIVE Different Tech had touched my car in some fashion. They finished all of my requested services and told me my car was ready to go and asked me to pull the car out of the garage. I am then lead through the shop to get my car and pull it out. After pulling the car out of the garage I sat and situated myself for at least 3 mins and then drove off down the road. Once on the road I drove about 12 miles before I got to the freeway getting up to 55mph. Once on the freeway I cruised at about 65mph for about 8 miles when suddenly my hood slams open destroying my custom hood, my front windshield, and denting my roof and moon roof all the while nearly causing me to wreck. I immediately got on the phone with the service station which asked to call me back which I said fine. In the mean time I traveled to the nearest gas station which what at the top of the canyon. They called me back to ask me to come back so take some picture to file a report and I agreed. I then spent the next week being jerked around by Goodyear's customer service and was ultimately told that it was my fault and that it was me that wanted to open my hood even though I was asked to open it and was told that it HAD to be opened to perform the requested service by more than one person including the customer service representative. He then told me that he didn't care what I thought and wasn't concerned that I was going to have my insurance pursue him and the company and in fact dared me to pursue him. Needless to say that is my very intent and that they have lost a customer for LIFE!! I am also now spreading the word on their poor business practices and customer relations. So heed my warning.
file a complaint with the bureau of automotive repair, they are always on the consumer side and will be more then glad to join you in court if they have to. If you can explain everything as you did here im sure you will have a case
sorry about your loss

I quit letting people work on my car for this very reason. IF I have to let them, then I'm watching it all like a hawk. There is no waiting in the lobby. They usually have no problems with me waiting behind some imaginary line "for insurance reasons". I tell them it's nothing personal but just past experiences... they're usually car folk and understand. If not, then tough ****.
I once had an oil fill station OVER FILL my daily driver. Which resulted in me having to replace the front main seal out of my own pocket. Lesson learned. I'm not leaving those places until I check everything over. Once you leave the shop they basically will win whatever case you can throw at them.

You might also consider contacting Goodyear directly to inform them of this. I'm sure that they wouldn't be happy with the attitude of the shop, since it is their name that will be dragged through the mud as a result.

i used to work at another major corp shop like that. honestly, you will lose. you really have no case. only for this reason, you have no proof that they asked you to do anything, unless they have video with audio, which no one really does.
i have to agree with alot of the guys here, i dont let anyone touch my ****, i learned that a LONG time ago, i have my own horror stories.
lesson learned, do not under any circumstance leave your car to anyone without inspecting before and after.

I'm very sorry to hear that! i would have started crying srsly...
I have also learned my lesson with tire shops
When I bought my first car (mitsu starion) I bought bran new tires for $450 what I didn't realize at the time is that one of the front rims was from an earlier year starion which was a different offset than the rest of the tires.
So when the tire shop put that front tire and wheel back on they ignored the fact that the tire was hitting the spring perch (a lot!) so when I left the shop and started driving, the spring perch started cutting into my tire about a 1/8 of an inch.
Long story short, they didn't do **** about getting me a new tire (after getting a new rim) or my money back. I just don’t get what they were thinking after they bolted the wheel back up and tried to spin it and It didn’t spin…

damn dude gl with BAR, in the process of going after a shop (not for my FC but for my stupid civic
)
so far my case is looking good because everything happened at the shop and they have camera's
but like your case is harder since it happened after you left...
BAR always wants tangible evidence if you can manage to come up with that your golden

Yes I do have camber plates and when they asked me to pop the hood I didnt have a problem with that because I was presuming that I would have to use them. Turns out I was really good putting everything together because the only things that were out of spec were my front wheel Toe and rear wheel camber. Which I told them to leave the rear camber were it was.
Goodyear is a big company. If you take them to court with plenty of proof against them, you WILL win. Once I brought my car to goodyear to have a coolant leak looked at, and after spending $100, they told me they cant figure out why the check engine light is on, and they cant find the leak, but it looks like its coming from the turbos and they dont do that type of work. He said he felt sorry for me so they reduced the price to like $80 or something but I cant believe I spent that much money to have them do something I could have done myself with NO special tools and for free.
I ended up bring it to Mazda and spent a little over $1000 to replace the TPS and fix the coolant leak. I will never bring my car back to any GoodYear shop. and NEVER again to the dealer. From that point on, I do all the work on my car and the only thing I bring my car to the shop for, is tire balancing, alignment and oil changes and I bring it to the shop I work at cuz I know all the guys lol

i don't get what your crying about??? Why didn't you check the hood before you left after you pulled the car out of the garage? Makes sense to me, doesnt it? If they asked you to open it, im pretty sure they didn't know how to close it either, and if you saw a hand full of techs butt ******* your car, touching it, driving it around, and working on it, wouldn't you check on the quality of there work after it was all done and said...Sounds like you got some good money invested in your car, why didn't you wait outside to watch, wait and observe the work being done?? My two cents don't get pissy lol...you got to do your part too...
This is an easy thing to win, and yes it takes up needless time to get back what was damaged, but in the end you will win...

When paying a professional to perform a job its under the impression and expectation that it is going to be performed correctly. Yes it's always a good idea to check and make sure and thus the possibility to avoid future headaches but by no means it should be necessary.
The only downside is the deductible that you must eat. But if your insurance company is worth a **** they should be going after goodyear for that as well.
