"Modified Exhaust" Fix it tickets...

So I live in socal... been driving my beater FC for a while with it one step away from being registered (smog) but still technically registered non-op (all fees paid for registration though).

Anyway, one of the reasons smog wasn't happening was a little mishap left the underside of the car a little beat up... as in the precat was bent UP which made a nice huge exhaust hole... and my catback was already a CS exhaust... so imagine louder than a CS exhaust... sounds like a damn demon just idling... sounds like a nation of screaming apes at about 7k.

But I drive conservatively on the streets, I know it's loud... but I have to get to work just like everyone else.

Anyway, long story somewhat shorter... about a week ago a pig pulled me over (er, COP sorry) and started all nice... I was honest and said yeah I'm working on fixing it to get it smogged... reason I have the aftermarket exhaust is the stock one was bent (true, spun out on a canyon road about a week after Seven Stock last year, got so close to the side in the spin that it bent the tailpipes but didn't scratch the bumper... then the exhaust burned a hole through the bumper on my way home... blah) and that the reason it was loud was because it was damaged by a rock that I ran over (long story, but true) and I was working on getting a replacement. In the mean time, apart from the exhaust leak, it had a CAT on it.

So the little ****** goes back to his car, about 5 minutes later (that is a long time when you're sitting in front of a cop waiting) asks me to get out, tells me he's impounding the car, get your stuff, etc etc.

It took me almost $300 and 1.5 days off work (hurts more than the $300) to get my car back, Robert from Rotary Shack again saved me with a lot of helpful advice and happened to get an NA exhaust track in his shop this week that I'm going to be using. And instead of trying to pass smog and making my car not a giant polluter... **** this state AND the environment, I'm going with high flow everything now. The cost for me to actually fix the car is more than twice as much as "another method". Thanks for showing me the light PIG!

Anyway, the ticket he gave me is a fix it... registration and "modified exhaust to amplify noise"

Just wondering what you guys can say about these fix it tickets... what I plan on doing is swapping on a stock exhaust, taking it in to get it checked off, swap it back off, go to court and show the judge the signed sheet... done.

Is there a better method? Anything I can say next time some cop pulls me over for the same thing? (bound to happen)

You play you pay. ******* whiners.

I love hearing these stories where it's the Cop's fault your exhaust was loud and you modified your car.

Please explain how the officer managed to install the exhaust on your car without you knowing.

Are you guys done being fucktards? I like how westcoast didn't even read the post...

And I knew you'd post fufuboi, since you're a cop or something like that.

I never said it was the cop's fault, but considering the situation there's no reason for him to enforce that law... it doesn't help jack ****. The hicks at the impound give him a cut... that'd be the only reason he'd be inclined to do anything... so I stand by what I say... and **** pigs.

So Police Officers aren't allowed to enforce the law unless it is a major crime?

It's not like I have never gotten a bullshit ticket. I have been pulled over and ticketed more than anybody on this forum. I even got a seatbelt ticket 6 months ago. I might have been disappointed, but I never whined and bitched about the cop DOING is job.

Fight the ticket, tell the judge that your exhaust noise level was neber challenged with a legal decibal reader. Take more time off from work and lose the case.

Where's Whitesurferd00d when you need him? He always has good advice, like when he spoke at the Beater Meat Deux.

Thats how I won a modified exhaust ticket back in the day. Too bad it doesn't work anymore since the State of California have now given state referee's the proper equipment to measure decibel levels. The judge will just tell you to take it to one of those if you think your exhaust is under the limit. Guess what, that equals more time off of work and a fee to get it tested.

I am a firm believer in fighting these things, if you're a salaried employee.

As far as the noise ticket, just do whatever you can to make the car quieter. Take it to the referee (that's the only way to get it signed off, if it passes), and if it's 96.5 dB or below, then you pass. If you do pass the referee will put a sticker on the back of the ticket and you'll need to take your ticket back to court to show that it passed. Oh, and there is no charge for the noise test.

how do you fight driving an unregistered car?

the cop probably could have let it slide but technically any registration over 3 months out they are supposed to impound the car.

I know he could have let me slide, because another cop pulled me over for the same thing two nights before and let it go with just the fix it ticket.

Anyone know how I can measure dBs before to see if I would pass?

I know the car is very loud even with the CS on there, but probably below 95dB... 95dB is really loud.

Although the weird thing is although the CS exhaust isn't very loud, it's VERY low-tone... you can hear it from a pretty far distance... it's very bass-y.

And do they measure backfire? 'Cause when my car backfires it's pretty damn loud.

so you got pulled over 2 nights before for expired tags?

the first cop warned you that your car could be impounded right? i had a similar thing happen to me, i took the registration down to the DMV and explained the situation and they gave me temporary tags so that i could drive the car until i got it to pass smog, im now on my second extension for the temp permit but i can at least drive legally with '04 tags.

sorry to be the crapper but you pushed your luck, not the cops fault in this case.

When they first initiated the program, they charged a fee. They must have changed it.

In any case, you got lucky the FIRST time you got pulled over for it. You pushed your luck, and got raped the second time. I guess you didn't respect the first Officer's warning. All it would have taken was to get some temp registration.

This is not the only way. The other way is to just pay the ticket. I got a modified exhaust ticket, did nothing to fix, and just paid an additional $60 bucks when the bill showed up. That will be the end of it.

My V6 Amigo got busted for modified exhaust, has a magnaflow that made a lot of noise, and the exhaust tip stuck way out I didn't have time to trim it.

I put a 3 disc carsound insert in the pipe and trimmed the tail pipe. Kept magnaflow on there and it was quiet enough to pass noise signed off for $10 DONE. Removed insert and back on my merry way.
