CA Losing California Title during transfer of car?

I am in San Diego, California, I just received a 1987 Mazda RX7, I got a bill of sale, and I did have a title until it somehow disappeared and I have yet to find it. The previous owner never put the title into his name and he has no way to contact the previous owner from him. The car has plates but last registration was expired in 2006. Has anyone had to deal with this, any recommendations?

I know it's pretty stupid to lose the title during this, but it happened. Only wish it didn't. Thanks for any help.

AAA or DMV should be able to give you the previous registered owner's name and address. Bring them a bill of sale to sign along with lost pink slip doc. If they are outside your area, AAA or DMV will give you a form in a sealed envelope. yes, it is sealed and you will need to send it to PO in registered mail to complete and to send back to DMV or to you.
