I don't see why not. Assuming it's a vanity plate.

vanity plates and black plates are transferable ... and i believe the blue ones are too. I think the only plates that are not are the white ones that are not vanity plates

i guess i will call the DMV tomorrow

black plates are not transferable unless it is a pre-69 car and the plates were originally from your car
at least thats what they said when i try to put te black plates into my 69 chevelle

they wont let you do blue plates at all , same with the golden state 87 plate

the other white plates, they dont care - at least tats what it was last year when i was at dmv

ca really needs to get rid of the gay current plates....most boring of any state. when i went to the dmv to pay reg for the gs this year they gave me new plates even though my current plates were only 6 years old or so. kinda odd considering my bronco II plates are completely trashed, as in barely readable. i mean every state has a nicer plate than ours by far. maybe they can exempt 85 and older cars from smog too...

Strange... I've personally seen late-model cars sporting yellow-on-blue plates once in a rare while.

^ me too.

You could always just try and register a blue plates number as your vanity number then put the blue plate on and see if the cops give a ****.

There is a place in Temple City that specialize in registration and such. they have a way to make an original blue plate as a "specialized plate" like the newer plates.

On the other hand, per DMV, once a car is dead, the blue plate dies with it. It means it cannot be re-used

i think if you were to ask 10 different DMV's you would get 10 different answers... how frustrating

i know its possible, there just has to be a way to do it, that i dont know of.i just seen a 2003 honda civic with blue plates that read 01tuff7.i think we just have to pay more and have them as a personalized plate.i will find out soon im about to register a 74 mazda rx2 with its original plates, the car is not in the dmv system so like wacky said the plate died with the registration.

those got to be specialized blue plates. when a vehicle is sold, the owner has the option to keep and transfer to the next vehicle. As I said, it can be done per reliable source except I cant pursue it at this time due to busy work schedule. So in summary, orig blue plates (not belonging to your car) can be done but it will be considered as a "specialized plate" so your registration will increase and there is "service fee" to get this done. I will look more into after 7stock

Just wanted to put some closure to this topic...

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg352.pdf

Per California DMV website
V C Section 5004.1 Model Year Date License Plates
Model Year Date License Plates

5004.1. (a) (1) An owner of a vehicle that is a 1969 or older model-year vehicle or the owner of a commercial vehicle or a pickup truck that is a 1972 or older model-year may, after the requirements for the registration of the vehicle are complied with and with the approval of the department, utilize license plates of this state with the date of year corresponding to the model-year date when the vehicle was manufactured, if the model-year date license plate is legible and serviceable, as determined by the department, in lieu of the license plates otherwise required by this code.(2) The department may consult with an organization of old car hobbyists in determining whether the date of year of the license plate corresponds to the model-year date when the vehicle was manufactured.

(b) A fee of forty-five dollars ($45) shall be charged for the application for the use of the special plates.

(c) In addition to the regular renewal fee for the vehicle for which the plates are authorized, the applicant for a renewal of the plates shall be charged an additional fee of ten dollars ($10). If payment of a regular vehicle renewal fee is not required by this code, the holder of license plates with a date corresponding to the model-year may retain the plates upon payment of an annual fee of twenty dollars($20) that shall be due at the expiration of the registration year of the vehicle to which the plates were last assigned under this section.

(d) If a person who is authorized to utilize the special license plates applies to the department for transfer of the plates to another vehicle, a transfer fee of twelve dollars ($12) shall be charged in addition to all other appropriate fees.

Amended Sec. 1, Ch. 497, Stats. 2007. Effective January 1, 2008. Operative July 1, 2009.
Amended Sec. 216, Ch. 179, Stats. 2008. Effective January 1, 2009.

I have always wanted to kinda "stretch" the law a little.

I know it is ILLEGAL to tamper with the plates...but..here is the but.

How about just customizing it yourself. Paint the letters/numbers yellow and then plate blue.

As long as the are not messing with the actual ID of the plate I am thinking it should be fine. The point is if a cop is behind or a meter maid wants to give you a ticket, your plate is 100% legible and is correct it should be fine.

Plus I think owning an older car is "easier" to get away with it. I bet if I customized mine to a blue plate no cop would question it. I have personalized plates and they are definitely PERIOD CORRECT right? A 1985 car should have Blue Plates. So...I dont think a cop would say **** or even bother.

side story - when I bought my car, it had the sunset CA plates, and I had to trade them in when I went vanity. A part of me thinks I should of left them for a real OG look.

There is a place where your current white plate can be changed to blue/yellow lettering or number but you need a Vegas address as it is illegal in Cali. Besides, you can tell if its legit or not. the 70s came with 6 digit # and 7 for 80s

It is illegal to paint you plate. I think the best way to do it is find a nice set of plates you would like to run. Then go and pay for vanity plates with the exacts same numbers. Then don't run the brand new vanity plates run the old school plates of your choosing. I might do that on my FD with a set of black plates I have.
