CA smog check questions (not again right?)
CA smog check questions (not again right?)
Hi guys, I went to get a smog check for my new 7 last Friday but failed. The smog guy told me the numbers were real close to passing. I don't have a copy of the test though. The smog guy told me to change the spark plugs and spark plug wires (does it really make a difference?) He also told me to change my oil, which I did before I did the smog test, but still failed. Took out the spark plugs, and they were all dirty and needed replacing. Changed the spark plugs using NGK bur7eq's and bur9eq's and NGK spark plug wires. Smog guy also told me to fill the gas with premium 91 gas even though my car is stock.
Was there a reason why the previous owner put all bur7eq's spark plugs in there?
Does the smog guy know what he's talking about about putting premium gas in my car or what? Hm..

Put the converters back on, change the spark plugs, run 87, drive the car hard on the freeway for 20 mins and drive it down and if you can, leave it idling so the cats stay hot, then take the test. If the HC is less than 100ppm past failing after all that, then drive the car down to a quarter tank, add a gallon of denatured alcohol (should be $10-15 at OSH/Home Depot), drive it back very gingerly (don't rev high), and try again. Should work. After that, pass or not, fill the tank up all the way and dilute the alcohol. Mine went from 360ppm with alcohol to 470ppm with none.
