Registering a non-California car in California
It's true that cars originally sold in california many times have more intensive smog equipment, but that doesn't stand in the way of bringing in a car from outside the state.
Bottom line, It's the same routine whether either way. Just have to pass the visual and sniffer.

Non-CA or federal cars have less restrive smog requirements and do not need any CA conversions. Conversions to meet smog laws are only for cars from out of the country. There is nothing you have to do for an out of state car that you don't do for a CA car.
1. Smog test (computer automatically tests to federal standards at any CA smog place)
2. register with DMV (easier at AAA)
3. go to nudy bar and offer ride to stripper.

I got my FD out of state and I didnt have any problems registering it here 3 years ago. You need to get the car looked at by the DMV and get it smogged. The DMV inspects the car to verify the vin#, mileage, and some other minor stuff. Its kind of like a safety inspection. Its pretty easy stuff.
