They can pull you over for having anything that isn't stock just to inspect the car for any illegal modifications. Just accept the fact that if you mod your car it is likely you will get stopped for it.

Its something you gotta be a minority to experience in order to see it. The cops dont know he has mods on his car, they just pull it over and happen to hit hte jack pot.

Also the laws are stupid, you could have a modded car, and have like 2-3 cats to meet smog.

I always felt visual inspection should be disregarded. It shouldnt matter what your engine bay looks like.

I'm 22 and I fail to see how my age makes my statement any less credible. Leave your car stock if you don't want to get pulled over. Plain and Simple.

It's not your race that gets you pulled over, unless you are RACING.

inexperience that's what makes you less credible. You will see as you get older and hopefully wiser. You will understand how police bullied you when you were young. How they crossed the line, and how many tickets would have been thrown out or never given in the first place. Knowledge man.

can't argue with that. But you still don't have to let the cops walk all over you.

I've never been bullied or "walked all over" by a police officer. Sure I've been stopped for speeding, no front license plate, modified exhaust. I consider that NORMAL since all those things are valid reasons to be pulled over. I don't whine because some cop pulled me over, I deal with it. It is a result of my own actions that I TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR! More people ought to try that now and then.

Pulling you over for LEGAL gauges is bulling... It's an invalid excuse to search, since you are still a "kid" they get away with it. BTW 20 vs 22 is the same **** from where I stand.

The exhaust is LEGAL too, but still gives them reason to believe I have illegal modifications. There is no way they could have known I was a kid. They were never beside me or in front of me. I don't consider that bullying, it is a nuisance, yes but well within their rights.

As soon as they get off their patrol car and physically see you they realize you are a "kid". Man I'm telling you I've been there. As you get older you will see things change. The cops still try but if you are knowledgable they are more likely to back off.

Wow, you're a real clown, Brismo! LOL!

Live to Drive, you're ABSOLUTELY CORRECT in saying that many people in general have to take responsibility for their actions-that honorable characteristic seems to have died a quick death BUT, and I don't know your race, you cannot imagine the disparity in the DEGREE of harassment incurred.

I've been fortunate in that I've only been on the barrel end three times in my life. If it were not for my understanding of the law and the way I talk, I'd most likely would have been locked up or worse, shot to death. Instead, i was able to turn the tables and left the police with the notion to "leave this negro alone cause he's one of those educated ones".

I kinda laugh at stuff like that now that I'm older, conversely, it's REAL SAD that my mother and father had to teach me this stuff when I was 16!

Its funny when people throw race into everything. I have no doubt that it is in some cases, but everyone always throws that in. It also makes it a real problem when everyone refuses to "let cops walk all over them". Thats not saying that you shouldn't understand and know your rights, but at the same time, when you react a certain way or refuse to give out simple information it will cause problems. Yes your race could play into how a cop initially sees you. Do I think its right? Somewhat. I've had a black friend pulled over by a BLACK cop and given somewhat of a hard time. Maybe that cop was racist too?
I have never been given a hard time by a cop. I answer their questions and don't give them a hard time. They're doing their job and if you have an illegal, or aftermarket exhaust in general that is loud then be ready to get pulled over.

Mutaku, your comments alone indicate your scope is limited. I've had the opportunity to live in every corner of the States for a significant amount of time to observe how police engage minorities and the youth. In every single case, your race predicted how police initially approached you-social standing, or class was the following indicator. How is social standing profiled? Simply by the articulation of the words that come out of your mouth! "Profiling" is not something that was conjured up by the "typically complaining black man". It's born in the police dept to add some sort of consistency to doing their jobs.

Now i can immediately tell that you are frustrated with the infusion of race into "everything". But, at sometime, you will have to come to some understanding that the United States was established for the benefit of european businessmen (read white) and all laws, schooling, and business created thereafter are to support that benefit. It wasn't until the 50's that the Bill of Rights started adding amendments for minorities (and I'm not talking of white women). Hell, voting rights for blacks/other minorities hadn't been amended until the early 60's, so please understand that that dark period is still deeply entrenched in the minds of whites and blacks living that period.

I got yanked over on my R1 I bought 3 weeks ago. Cop asks me where my plate was, I told him I just bought the bike. He tells me to put the plate on, but I haven't gotten the plate. Got pulled over for no reason. Cop was racist cuz I was white on a black bike.

I'm fighting all the tickets under Profiling. And sending the judge a pic of my car.

It was just cause I was driving a nice car in a shitty part of town.
So the cop was profiling you right??? He pulled you over because you are a black kid in an FD even though on the ticket he wrote you were Hispanic... He used an excuse of "exhaust" to pull you over... you were just a happy motorist and the white cop just went after you because you're a minority.

WTF man??? White man just trying to keep the black man down... yeah right...

I've had a midpipe with a stock catback (READ: the quietest catback out there) and my car was ******* LOUD! I replaced it within a week because there is no way no how that it was even close to sounding non modified. Obvious illegal item and I knew it would get me pulled over.

Why don't you grow up and quit making excuses. It's cool that you try to get out of tickets (**** that's what we all do) but to come in here and completely deflect blame and claim that you were profiled it's idiotic, asinine, and irresponsible. As you take away merit from those that have actually been profiled. Instead of you coming in here crying about being profiled be lucky that the cop didn't look for a cat. As that fine will run you over $1K.

You know, I must have been talking this up too much. Got pulled over. Seriously, I got a DWB! I was in the typical strip mall grabbing lunch. When I finished eating, I headed on out to my car, putting my black baseball cap back on (backwards). It was a pretty hot day, so of course I was wearing a T-shirt (white) & shorts (long & black) black kicks.

I jumped into my silver Passat, debadged, & dropped on conservative 18" multi-spoke silver wheels. Pulled out onto the main road into one of the two left-hand turn lanes, made the turn, drove about 100 yards and noticed a cop car moving rapidly along side of me on an access road. Well he had to stop at a break in the access road in order to join the main traffic-where I was traveling. The funny thing is I looked at the cop and smiled and nodded because, well, he was clearly looking at me.

Now I wasn't speeding-in fact I recall others in the fast lane passing me thinking they needed to slow down. The hardware store was my next location, and coming up quickly on my left. So I waited for an opening, signaled. 50 ft later, I'm pulling into the hardware store, getting out of my car when the cop pulls in right on my bumper.

Like I said, I've got a bit of "training" with this type of "situation" so I proceeded to sit back down in my car as I know my size can be imposing. The cop started asking if I was at the strip mall and wanted to know if i was at the T-Mobile store, which was located about four doors down from where I was eating. He started getting aggressive, to which, I went from smiling to very straight faced and said, "wait a minute why are questioning me"? He told me that there was an incident and that I fit the description. He saw me pull out of the strip mall from 50 yards away in the opposite direction when he got the call! I said but you were coming from the opposite direction. How could you have seen me as a potential suspect from so far away and then it clicked... The perp was black. I looked at him as he was returning my I.D. and said. "are you serious"? He stated "hey, I got to check out everything bro"!!!! He wasn't even in that mall!

I'm not even going to talk about him asking me twice if I owned my car when he took my ID. INCREDIBLE!!!!

I had a similar thing happen to me once, back when I lived in Van Nuys; coming home late one night, making the usual turn from Sepulveda onto Sherman Way I noticed a couple cruisers hanging out at the Mobil station. Carried on into my apartment parking lot, around back, into my stall... to discover a cruiser right on my bumper as I parked, which proceeded to light me up with the spot.

Weird. I wasn't driving fast or anything.

I waited the "smart way;" window down, hands on steering wheel. #2 comes up to my rear quarter; He says "Please step out of the car."

Double wierd: cops usually prefer you to stay in the car unless some serious huhu is up.

I complied; it was winter, so I was wearing my oversize black leather jacket over a t-shirt, jeans, sneaks. I keep my hands well to my sides.

#1 is still back at the open driver door of the unit; triple wierd. This situation seems awful tense.

I ask #2 again; did I do something wrong? He asks me if I'd been around the neighborhood the last hour or so. I said no, just coming home from work late. He asked me if I'm sure I hadn't been near the Mobil station in the last hour. I told him, no, just drove by on the way home.

He's in the meantime been poking at the slack of my jacket, under my armpit, with his radio antenna. He asks if he could look inside my car.

I told him, "Sure. Would it make you more comfortable if you could pat me down, too?"

His eyebrows went up. "Are you volunteering to be searched?"

I said; "Yes. I don't know what's going on, but it's clear you are looking for something specific & dangerous. I don't have anything dangerous on me, and I don't think I have anything to do with whatever's going on. I'd be a lot more comfortable if you two were able to relax, so go ahead."

He gave me a quick going over, and asked me to step to the rear of my car as #1, now willing to come out from behind the door of the squad car, started to look thru my -7.

He said; "We had a report of someone matching your discription threatening someone with a gun. When you drove by, the witness pointed at your car and said 'That's the car.' "

I told him again that I'd been at work all day, was just getting home. I also told him that I didn't even own a gun at the moment. I told him there was a camping knife in the tool space, but it was far out of the reach of a driver, there for emergencies.

Needless to say, they didn't find a gun in my car. They did find my (probably illegal) 8" survival knife in the tool stowage by the back hatch. They just left it there.

After they were done, #2 thanked me for being so cooperative; I told him, "Look, the last thing I want is to be making the police nervous about me, when they are looking for somebody else."

The cop actually shook my hand as he left.

True story; I call it "the time I was stopped for DWW."

Damn! LOL! Somewhat similar, only difference is you were visually identified (albeit mistakenly). The cop that stopped me was responding to a radio call who just happened to notice a black man, in a car, pulling out of the strip mall from 50 yds away!

Their witness visually identified my car (mistakenly) at night; no way they could have seen me inside it; Nighttime, windows closed, tinted glass, and from the passenger side.
