the site you posted has great prices. i don't know if any of the local shop comes close to that. might want to check out cost+shipping versus local+tax.

Well you can always get a bike with regular disk brakes an upgrade it later, for the price of $350, you won't get much greatness from a brand new bike. I say the extra weight and dollars is worth it for disk brakes, but I used to go mountain biking in the mud and rain constantly.
Oh and my old shop doesn't carry Giants, we mostly have Treks and Cannondale's. Or if you'd like i can look into some awesome gary fihsher's.

Just for referance I hope you know if you were to injure one of these people you could be charged with vehicular man slaughter... If they can prove that you had intention, which hitting someone with any part of your car in which the cyclist is in their own lane is, you could be charged. I think its pathetic that you feel so much anger towards a sport that in no way shape or form takes away from you being able to drive and enjoy yours... Maybe takes away from you being able to drive wrecklessly like a dumb-*** taking wide corners and riding both lanes, but what harm is a bike taking up all of two feet causing.... Traffic jams? Really come the hell on I dont know one cyclist who rides in a lane enough to cause a traffic jam... its the dumb *** who doenst know his car and has no ability to judge distance that does that. Im assuming that might be you... As far as the clothing its serves a purpose more so than an idiot who drives on the street with full race bucket seats, race harness, roll cage, a GT sized wing, or monster tack with 2 inch shift light... You have no substance to your arguements other than pure like/dislike which makes you ignorant and in my opinion not worthy of such a machine as the rx7...

They love showing the world how healthy they are by putting on skin tight suits and riding around in the middle of the road.
They create traffic and causes danger to drivers.
However, I have long looked past that by creating a fun and challenging game.
I made a game of passing cyclists while giving them the minium required amount to pass them. It is a point system - you score 1, or 2 points depending... and sometimes, you get a 0.
The idea is that, when you pass a cyclist, you have to stay in your side of the double yellow. Having your outside tire roll on the double yellow disqualifies you and you get 0 points. If you successfully pass them, you get one point. If you pass them close enough where you did not make contact with them, but cause them to swerve, scare them, or cause them to flip you off, it is two points.
This is the part that gets tricky. If you can make contact with them with your passenger side mirror, cause them to swerve until they recover, but they do NOT fall off from the bike, that is 100 points. However, if they fall off, it is 0 points
Also note that there MUST be an audible sound from making contact with the cyclist.
There is also another part to that. If you make contact with them incorrectly, sometimes they may fall and will cause their bike and themselves to go under your right rear tire. In the event of that happening, you are to continue driving, but you have to start the game over - at 0 points.
The points ARE ACCUMLATIVE. So obviously, it is worth taking the risk to make contact with cyclists, and if you do not have alot of points raked up, it is also an easy way to earn more points...
So far, I am currently at 419 points!

To the O.P. what are you looking to spend? For 600-700 you can find a good deal on a Full Suspension bike that will last you a long time. It may not be new but old bikes built by reputable companies, Specialized, Yeti, Foes, Jamis, Santa Cruz, Trek will last longer than any cheap bike you can buy from Target, Walmart, Sports Auth. What I always thought was funny is those places all have a disclaimer usually on the bikes that say something like not for offroad use...
Look on craigslist for an older Specialized enduro 02-03... You can usually find them in good shape for around 500-800...

Liking the Trek 820. I want a hardtail and the brand new Trek 820 is only $329 msrp.
And the cyclists are annoying...even when I was going for a scenic cruise by the north coast there were packs of them. Like I'd have to wait to pass them...The roads I see them on that makes me mad are the roads with like a 1' bike lane. NOT meant for bikes, but they use them anyways. I use my parents' road bikes, but am smart enough to know that if there isn't a nice big bike lane I should stay out.
This also plugs into why I want a mountain bike instead of a road bike
Even though I'm addicted to speed and cruise on my mom's bike at 28mph, I'd rather go trailing out of people's way and offroading a bit anyways.

^^ Hey, I wanna work at Performance Bicycles. Hiring? and for the man buying the bike- for a lower price range I personally wouldn't look in to Trek because they are expensive, meaning if you get one that msrp's at 329 i'm sure every thing will be junk on it. I purchased a K2 Trail Bike years ago- 5 in. of travel, Ok Sun Rims, Fox rear shock, Manitou forks, avid disks. It was a good bike $750 though

Dont get me wrong I have shared my frustration with a roadie a time or to, but I would never go out of my way to put someone in harms way( As to try and see how close I can get to them)... I have been riding mountain bikes for about 2 1/2 years now... I never really saw the point in roadbikes untill I got out there and did it about 2 weeks ago... All it took was one ride on a road bike and I am hooked... Now I am selling one of my mountain bikes to purchase a road bike... I have a new respect, people dont really understand what it takes to pound pedals for 4 hours not only the physical but the mental... Got hooked and loved it so I bought a 06 Jamis XLT 3.0 then I started upgrading everything sold that and now I have a 09 Orbea Alma Carbon and a 08 Specialized S-Works Epic... If you let it it will suck you in...

Not a fan of fixies...and I've ridden road bikes. Last summer I road one everywhere almost refusing to drive unless it was out of town. I biked about 30-40 miles a day....it was a good workout, nice scenery where I went for rides, and going 28 mph was cool....but I'd rather rock the offroad stuff.
I'll look into the bay I guess for a used one..since noone in Sac/Chico seems to have anything.
And I have a skateboard. They aren't all that fun.

I do appericate your reply - but I think you are out of context in your assumption!
Bikes are not RX-7s.... believe it or not... and neither is my daily driver.
My daily driver is a full size truck (no, not because I have a small *****, but because I bought the truck for my old job - there are trailer dents in the back from the trailer uncoupling *after all, I want it to hit slam into the back of my truck than an innocent driver on the road, right?*, and a bent truck bed and a damaged cab from a gooseneck dislodging.) On a truck that is almost as wide as the road, how much room can you actually give the cyclist to pass safely (the same one that rides in the middle of the damn lane) without crossing the double yellows and putting myself (or my friends) in danger?
Don't get me wrong, I have no problems with people riding bikes as a form of transportation. However, the people that wear their full suits and dis-regard for the publics safety riding their "carbon fiber bikes" or whatever is a problem, esspecially when they are trespassing on private property!
That is the problem that we see here.
If they treat it as a "sport", well... take it farther up this same road where there are no house, or cars for that matter. If they want a real sport... run on foot, like so many of my neighbors have done! (They even stop at the side of the road, step on the dirt, when a car passes!) Or, if they think it is an excercise.... ride a bmx or a mountain bike.... that will give them a *real* excercise.... or hell, just lower the tire pressure to 10 psi... the list could go on!
It is just pathetic to see 5, 10 cars, going under 15mph (on a 35) because our PG&E truck can't pass a cyclist (blind turns and elevation changes) when think they are healthy - while the pg*e trucks are repairing the powerlines for all the residents here...
Oh, and my rx-7 is completely stock on its outside, and its inside... and so have all of my old cars (well, my old 91 t2 had to have a cage installed along with a driveshaft loop and rear wheel studs... you can thank the nhra rule book).... what is your excuse?

You are obviously jealous that we live together in a villa, paid by our trust fund, and we are living it up healthy and gay (you might be as healthy as we are if you were vegan too). I hope I get a chance to throw my Louis Vuitton bike seat through your junk Rx7 window.

I've been cycling for over 35 years, both competitive and for recreation. I use to ride in the hills for training. Now I'm too fat and old to go uphill but I still put on my funny clothes and go out for a 30-40 mile ride a few times a week. I use to do century rides in the hills also but it had gotten too dangerous to ride those rides with all the new development (same two lane roads but a lot more traffic). I know a lot of the Lance Armastrong wannabe's on the group rides I go on are total a$$holes (both on and off the bike) but you can't lump every cyclist into the red light/stop sign running-road blocking group. Now I'm posting this because your suggestion really pisses me off. I've had jerks throw things at me just because I was an easy target over the years (and I wasn't blocking traffic). Funny thing is most of them were in big pick-ups (and I'm not profiling all pu drivers-not one of my pu driving friends are anti-cyclist). This past summer I was riding with my brother (in the bike lane) and some high school age f*cks threw oranges at us. I was hit on the thigh-left a bruise for a couple of months. Now this could have been really bad if one of us had been hit in the head. Assault with a deadly weapon can be either a felony or misdemeanor. Now I completely understand your frustration especially if these rides go through your neighborhood with little or no shoulder or if it's on private roads but is intentionally buzzing a cyclist to save a minute on your trip worth jail or prison time? Trespassing? Report them!They deserve to be cited! Are you going to run every SUV driving moron with a cell phone glued to his/her ear off the road because they cut you off in traffic also? I see more of those on my drive to work than I do cyclists. I know I can't change your views but I'm just saying life's too short.
Sorry for jacking the thread Nick. Keep looking on CL-times are tough and deals do appear often in the Sacto area. You can always mount some 1.25" slicks/semi slicks on your mtb and mess with some roadies if you have the gearing!

They are on a road with no shoulder, cliff on one side and a solid mountain on another. They are not allowing cars to past by being in the center of the lane. (I am sure they can see me with their sunglasses that have rear mirror, and helmets that have rear mirrors... and hear me with an diesel engine clanking at them).
I am not talking about a few bad apples here and there... I am talking about bad apples that you see at least 3-4 times going to town, every day of the week. There is a bike trail that the city built for them that detours around the residents and still give them the same scenic ride with elevation changes.... Infact, it is small enough that it is impossible for vehicles to get on it with cement posts on both ends!.... there is NO reason for them to be trespassing!

Again, it was your suggestion that bothered me as I have been a victim of harassment from drivers. It's one thing if I had it coming but that was never the case. Report the idiots to the cops. There was a group that use to blow through every stop sign on their way home from a ride. The neighbors complained and they put a motor cop out on one of the intersections every Saturday morning for a couple of weeks and after $270 per citation at the time, they quit using that route and the city collected a bit of revenue. Recently a ER doctor in SoCal was convicted and sentenced to a few years prison time for slamming on his brakes and having two cyclist smash into the back of his car to teach them a lesson. The cyclists at fault? I'd say partly but prison isn't a nice place. When I retire in a few years, I'd like to take some week long cycling trips and one of the roads that I'd love to ride is Hwy 1 between Monterey and San Luis Obispo but I won't do it for the reasons you stated. Whatever you do, keep your head on straight-they're not worth it. Being you're a rotary guy you can't be all bad! Done jacking Nick's thread.

Splin... I wasnt saying that some cyclist are not a bit frustrating its your referance in saying you try to get as close to them as possible if not clip them... Its all fun and games and the big problem is you dont relize those minor clips to you in your vehicle equal big problems for a cyclist... For one 99% of the time we are clipped to the bike the option or just hopping of and letting the bike crash is really no option... The bike goes down we go down and 5mph or 15mph we are going to get hurt if the bike goes down. I drive up highway 9 almost 3 times a week to go mountain bike which is a very popular road ride... I have never ran into one of these incosiderate riders... Nor have I ever I mean ever seen a roadbike ride in the middle of the lane on a climb. We are very aware of vehicles its the number one reason people are afraid of roadbikes and riding. As far as coming down the hills yes I see plenty on roadbikes taking up the lane and using it... But guess what I have never caught one of these or them go so slow as to get in the way of traffic... It is completely legal to ride a bike on the roads and they have just as much right to be there as you do. I think you choose to remember the obvious in the way more than the lighter becasue its what you look for... I personally have ridin up 9 and over skyline(35) and can tell you other than a very few amount of areas was there tight sections where a car,truck, bike could not fit together... As far as riding completely off the shoulder a roadbike is never going to do that its unsafe from all the debree from all the retards who drive up there like dumb-*** and you cant say there arent a lot of them and crash... It doenst take much to punture or shred a road tire on all the crap that gets pushed off the road... And sorry if I am legaly allowed to ride and take up a little of the lane so to be safe and not puncture a tire at 20mph and go down then so be it. I really think you cant appreciate it until you do it. I am not saying there are not a few bad apples but there are in everything... I can account more times how many times I have been on 9 and seen someone in a car, motorcycle cross the yellow to pass people on the left just becasue they wanted to go faster then being stuck being a road bike... Once again I am not knocking you or think down upon you for being frustrated its your means of dealing with that frustration that bothers me... Blown your horn, flip us the finger, cuss us out but you should never put another person in danger just becasue...

Uhhhh where im from, WA, disc brakes pwn. Sry guys but i dont like my brakes slipping in wet weather as im jamming down trails. Disc brakes > standard crap.
