Big Bend Open Road Race Summary from Ft. Stockton TX

Greetings fellow RX-7 enthusiasts,

Once again, the Big Bend Open Road Race was a complete sell out with 160 cars. Weather was great for the race but pretty rough for the Racer Welcome Party Thursday in Sanderson TX. The festivities were cut short by a tornado warning. Law enforcement evacuated us from the pavilion to the school gymnasium. The wind got serious then ominously went still with a temperature drop. That’s normally a very bad sign but we lucked out and only saw rain, hail and wicked looking clouds.

After some pre-race tuning and prep by Jay Evenson at “RX for Your 7” in Tucson, The Black Car ('93 R1) was looking to avenge the 3rd Place finish from last year. As usual, folks in our class were gunning for us and, as usual, we told them to “Come get some!”

Objective: Cover 118 miles (two 59 mile legs) in exactly 52 minutes and 26.667 seconds (00:52:26.667) for an average speed of exactly 135mph

Results: 00:52:27.213 (.546 seconds off) at 134.977 mph for 2nd Place out of 11 cars in class. Missed 1st Place by .205 seconds as they were dialed in at .314 seconds off. Sadly, 1st Place was also a corvette… grrrrr!

Although Deana and I missed 1st Place, our time did help propel Team Invaders back to 1st Place in the Team Challenge! After missing the championship last year due to DQ’s, the team got it together and brought the Team Trophy back home to Invaders. Out of 14 Team Invaders cars, 7 made it to the podium! Oh, and we beat out 5 corvette teams. (Team Invaders is made up of import cars)

We were blessed with a safe race which saw no accidents, no animals larger than a sparrow sacrificed and only 3 or 4 breakdowns. There was concern that one of the breakdowns, which was burning and filled with alcohol fuel, was going to set the county on fire, but it was quickly extinguished and all was well.

Next week, we’ll be heading out to Nevada for the Nevada Open Road Challenge. We’re hoping to do better than our previous 3rd Place finishes in the 150mph class.

Cheers,

Blue
Captain, Team Invaders Open Road Race Team
