Southland Gas Prices Up For Third Week In A Row

(CBS) LOS ANGELES Continued tight supplies and higher wholesale prices caused the average price of gasoline in the Southland to rise for the third consecutive week, but at a lower rate than the previous week, the Automobile Club of Southern California said Friday.

The average price of a gallon of regular self-serve in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area rose 4.8 cents over the past week to $2.691 Friday, 15.7 cents more than last month and 16.3 cents more than a year ago, according to the latest Auto Club survey of the region's gas stations.

The average price per gallon rose 8.4 cents from Feb. 9-16 and 7.1 cents from Feb. 2-9 after dropping for five consecutive weeks.

In Orange County, the average price per gallon rose 5.2 cents over the past week to $2.59. The price rose 8.3 cents from Feb. 9-16 and 7.2 cents from Feb. 2-9 after dropping for five consecutive weeks.

"When supplies tightened locally following an explosion and the shutdown of the state's fifth-largest crude oil field, wholesale prices for some grades of gasoline jumped by about 50 cents in one month," Auto Club spokeswoman Carol Thorp said.

The explosion to which Thorp referred occurred Feb. 6 at an oil field operated by a division of Los Angeles-based Occidental Petroleum in Taft, about 35 miles southwest of Bakersfield. At least four people were injured.

"Also, more California gasoline is being shipped to Phoenix because one of their usual suppliers in Texas is also experiencing production problems. That has added to the wholesale price spikes," Thorp said.

Actually, it sounds more like TX is the big problem here. Oh well, I heard on the news that gas will go up $.30 or so in the next couple days so I am sure panic buying will ensue and nobody will be able to buy gas next week without waiting in line for an hour.
