This isnt the first time I've read of people getting pulled over for "tinted lights" over the past 10 years I've been a member here. I've read and heard of people getting pulled over for this even if they have the 93 style lamps. I guess you can carry around that giant RX-7 coffee table book and bust it out whenever a cop pulls you over for the taillights? Maybe I should start doing this

I have the converted 99 tail lights, and have never been pulled over...at least not for that and honestly, I think its silly to get pulled over for that, because they have still have a DOT number on them. Honestly if you think about it, having authentic 99 spec tail lights are illegal because they are not DOT approved, and having 99 spec converted tail lights are still illegal even though they have the DOT stamp, because it's illegal to modify the stock lights.

I'll bet its illegal to lower your car, and illegal, to install aftermarket lights, and interior gauges, everything is illegal. As long as your car isnt 1'' from the ground with blacked out windows and blue headlights with an exhaust so loud it makes your ears bleed, I wouldnt worry about trying to have everything "legal", because with a car enthusiast, I dont believe that will ever happen. There's always gonna be a "gray" area.

So this holiday break I have to go and contest a ticket I got for my tinted Mazda 3 tailights (got a ticket earlier this month from a bored Irvine officer).
I am going to take in the paperwork from here to the CHP in Santa Ana and i will let you all know how it goes.

I have 93's converted to 99's and got the same ticket from CHP, i told him they were completely stock and he didn't believe me. Took my car to the local station and showed the local cop,he said well they look tinted but let me check the code book. because he wasn't a traffic cop. turns out the retard CHP wrote the wrong code and the local officer couldn't find it in his book so he wrote it off any way. then asked if it was CHP and i said yes, then he goes CHP's are dicks! lol he then suggested i get a friend who is a cop to write these things off next time lol so i lucked out until next time (knock on wood)

on a side note, ive thought about buying those clear ebay lights and taking the covers off and mounting them on the stock housings so it wont happen again, but im not sure how it will look, i like the darkness.

Great another possible thing to look out for, I am thinking of updating to the 99 spec lights at some point and now this.

Meiogirl you make an interesting proposal I might be interested in a trade.

Hey youngx7,

I did not get a ticket, or even a warning, the cop drove about 300 ft away with his lights on to go to an 'emergency' then turned them off. He didn't have me pop the hood. Now that I think about it I had turned into an apartment complex so I was not on a public road anymore, maybe thats why.
Anyhow he just kept saying those lights aren't legal, go to the dealership and get legal ones.

So I called the Tustin dealership and asked them about 99 spec lights, the parts guy said while they are not sold here, many ebay companies sell those sorts of lights. All they have to have on them is the DOT and they are legal.

Mine have the DOT, and there is no tint on the plastic, only the circle red lights. So I figure in that sense they are totally legal. I imagine yours are the same.

DigitalDude I live on the same block as the police station and pass it everyday. Just a matter of time before one of them got curious.
