Alternator question

Has anyone simply replaced bearings in an alternator, specifically an FD alternator?

Surprisingly, the FSM has the procedure to do it. Pretty simple job with a bearing puller. I bought the bearings from the dealer, but they weren't cheap. If I'd really taken my time, I probably could've spec'd out a generic part. Overall, didn't save much over finding a good used one.

I've had mine out before, but never tried to buy replacements.

Hozzy, you still looking to sell that clean S5 alt we talked about at the Puente Hills meet?

My new S5 alt was sold last week. I have the new S4 alternator on the shelf, I believe plug and play for your '80, I thought we were talking about.

What were the specs on the replacement bearings? I have a place in Anaheim I've bought bearings from before, so need that information to see if they have a pair in stock.

Thanks

That was probably it... I remember you showing me the S5 you had in your trunk that day, probably why it stuck in my head.

I didn't take measurements since I realized I wasn't going to be making a habit of it. I just threw on the bearings and called it a day. I may have thrown them into the bin of FD alternator parts, so I'll take a look next time I'm at the garage.

It was my first alt rebuild, so I don't know if this is common or not. But there was a trick to holding down the brushes when you re-assemble the internals. You need to put some kind of small probe through the back of the alt to get them to stay down during assembly.

You'll need 1x NTN SC8A37LH1 and 1x NSK B17-102DG3. I am now really irritated I didn't disassemble it first and source the bearings themselves.
