Glowing Downpipe
I recently added a downpipe along with a used stock cat (didn't appear clogged). When I start the car up and idle for less than 5 minutes the downpipe is glowing orange. I read in earlier posts that either the cat is clogged or air pump is not working. I also hear a strange sound coming from the the airpump area on startup so I suspect the airpump. Would a bad airpump cause the DP to glow so quickly? Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Easy way to check. Disconnect the cat and turn car on . . . if problem goes away then it is your cat ... else back to drawing board . . . . I personally expect it to be your cat . . . but take the time and do the test.

It's normal for the downpipe to glow orange at startup, thats when ur air pump is injecting air into the exhaust. You didn't notice before because you probably had your heatshield from your stock DP. If you disconnet your air pump, it won't glow anymore (try it), but then your main cat wouldn't last much longer.

I guess one question for you is . . . does the entire DP glow or just the upper part? I guess when I first read this, I thought you meant that the entire thing was glowing!

Just the upper part of the DP is glowing. I'm glad to hear that it's normal on startup. I assume it stops when the car's warmed up and not running as rich.
Thanks for the help.

Rotary Master
The upper part will glow after spirted driving as well, you have the highest exhaust temps at that point. If I remember correctly the exhaust temps out of the engine can reach 1300 F.

anybody know anything about Jet-Hot coatings??? i was considering sending my HKS DP to them to get their Jet-Hot 2000 coating. i think it's good for up to 2000F. hopefully it should help keep engine bay temps down. they quoted me a price of $82 ($60 coated inside & out + $22 return shipping).
comments anyone?? good or bad?????

Yeah, lately my airpump has been intermittently making these "chirpping" noises. Is this a sign of an airpump going bad? Or is normal for sounds to appear everynow and then?
