12A to 13B engine swap...

I have a 85 RX7 12A with a 5spd. What things will have to be modified to put a 13B in it. Do they use the same 5spd tranny, engine mounts, etc...

The '86 13B used the same tranny as the -SE. AFter that, I think they changed it.
A 13 B engine will bolt up to your transmission. You will need a oil pan from a GSL-SE, because one of the motor mounts will be on the side not the front. I think you also need a different front housing.

thanks for the advice, but are you saying that the only engine i could swap in is the 13B from a 86 or that the trannys would have to be swapped too from anything older than 86?

I think its like this.
The '86 used the same tranny as the '85 -SE. However, any 13B engine will be a perfect match to any 1st gen tranny, EXCEPT the 13B turbo. They used a different tranny and different bell housing pattern. Keep posting and consult a mazdatrix calalog or www.mazspeed.com; ultra garage, for more information.

just pick up a j-spec 13bt way cheaper than building it yourself unless you have the $$.

and any 13b can fit in a 1st gen you just need a gsl-se oil pan and front cover, plus racing beats 13binto12a frontmount bar...

ps all rx7 trannys have the same bolt up pattern it just the flywheels when things get interesting...

corksport sells them for 850 for 88 year ones and 950 i think for 89+. i dont know if you would want to go this route with the motor unless you use the block for n/a cause it can be a pita to get everything hooked up in a first gen..

Cool, I wasn't so sure of that either, but the TII tranny is not a direct bolt on to an N/A engine, correct? I'm pretty sure you can't use a TII tranny on a 13B OR a 12A w/o some modifications. The only different trans. that will work is the coveted GTUs close-ratio.

All 12 & 13 series motors have the same bolt patern its just a mater of the corect flywheel clutch combo.

more questions;

If i got a J spec engine would it come with the proper computer equipment, since it is going from a carb to FI. And where exactly would i go for the flywheel, junkyard searching or anything better?

When you get you motor it will NOT come with the comp. All your getting is a (complete) engine. Youll need to source the other parts, I found this to be the most difficult, you put adds up looking for your parts and you get a 10 to 1 deadbeat ratio.

What is your budget?
What trans are you going to run?
If stock 12a, Iv got an extra flywheel.

For the clutch/flywheel set-up tell me what year motor & the year and type of trans and ill tell you wich flywheels you can run.

Plan on about 2K not counting Trans.

Im still planning for the swap, trying to get a firm idea of what is required. I plan on putting in around 2k into the car, give or take, but thats not till later this year. I will probably run the 12a tranny if i can get away with it. The car is an 85 with a 12A, and i want to go to a 89 13BT engine.

so even a 88 13b-T will fit into my 1983 12a fb?
only things I will have to adjust is oil pan and the 12ato13b set up kit.

cause I think I just might buy the whole j spec engine swap when I save some mula.

now anyone know how i could possible mount a Front mount intercooler as well?
