The federal law (and most state laws) require that all emissions equipment be retained from the vehicle the engine came out of. So legally you need to get the smog pump, cats, stuff like that. Depending on the year of the car you may have to go through a tailpipe test, an OBDII test where they hook a cable to your PCM, or a dyno test. The engine has to be at least the same model year as the car or newer. All LS1's and most LT1's were made AFTER the last RX7 was even shipped to the US, so this shouldn't be a problem except in rare circumstances (ie 93 LT1 into 94 RX7). No matter what the case, the LS1/LT1 will without a doubt run cleaner than the rotary, and if a visual inspection shows you have the required equipment, there's no reason it should ever fail and emissions test. As the State Police officer told me (they run the program in MD): "if you don't tell us you changed the engine, we have no reason to look under the hood and investigate unless your test results are poor and we try to help you figure out what to replace"

I've heard on torquecentral that Hinson sends out good quality product but not always very fast. Considering nobody else can reliably produce it (at least that markets it) I'd send him my business if I had an FD I was going to convert. My 2nd gen conversion is taking enough of my time (and money) right now - the FD will have to wait awhile I guess.

What I would do if I were doing the swap is order the stuff now, so you have time to search for the right engine combo.

I thought they did emissions according to the year of the vehicle, but that may be just how its done down here.

In Texas, they do it based on the year of car. Mine will be a dyno run just as it was with the rotary.

That doesn't mean it is truly legal as I think federal law says you have to maintain the engine's emissions. In Texas, they won't care really as long as it passed the dyno run.

well, my interest is no longer my FC, i still love mazda's and always will, but i just got a '67 mustang fastback, which is worth more in its deteriorating state than my FC is w/o the motor (which i'm trying to sell), so emissions is not really my sense of concern, yet the legality problems i might face by running a newer motor. Afraid if i pull a gem of a motor out of a wrecked or insurance car, and later show it, that people will get to curious and start asking ?'s about where it came from, and without proper paper work, i'm afraid that i may start being the center of police attention, which i'd rather not have. following?

You will get proper paper work showing ownership/vin/mileage/etc. from the yard that sells you the motor.

If have a friend that is putting a twin turbo LS1/T56 in a '69 camaro. He can show where the engine came from if need be. For emissions, they won't even look twice due to the age of the car.

If you want to put a newer engine that is post emission testing, go for it.
