V8 engine weight?'s

Hey all I am looking for the v8 guys on the board. I was wondering if anyone had the weights of various american engines (gen 1 2 and 3 chevy and ford 5.0 both long and short block). My father is willing to give me the worked over motor that is in our 63 vette. And I would like to know what the weight situation would be with a older iron block SBC is, and its weights compared to the other v8 engine options out there.

At 575 lbs, a gen 1 SBC is indeed a 'heavy chevy'.

Does anyone know what a 5.3 iron block with aluminum heads weighs? GM says that an iron block LY6 with aluminum heads has a "shipping weight" of 539 lbs, but does that include the crate it is shipped in?

Hope that helps a little - not a fully comprehensive list but it's a start. Just google "V8 engine weight" and look around a bit - sure you'll find some more information.

Well, it depends

The problem with all these weight figures people toss around is that they are not consistent in terms of what is included. One figure I am pretty sure about is that a Ford 302 short block is 75 pounds lighter than an iron 350 Chev short block. Of course, it has fewer cubic inches, but the main difference is in the thinner castings and the fact that the Chev has fully internal balancing of the crank.

I added about 150 pounds to my car with the 302 and AOD tranny, and most of that weight difference is in the heavy transmission. I used aluminum heads, intake, water pump and radiator. Typically you will save about 50 pounds with aluminum heads on any of these motors.

Wow chevy engines are light compared to AMC, I just shipped a mid 60's 400 CI AMC engine and it came to 690 pounds with about 45 pounds of pallet.
