Some General SBC 350 help?

I feel this is the best spot to post this.
I bought a 94 chevy silverado for $400. And the motor needs some work and the transmission slips like hell in 3rd (drive). Most of my knowledge comes from working on my RX7. Which I plan to keep Rotary, I would just like some general advice on the 350. If I had the money I would just swap in a 4.8 seeing how you can find them for 500.

I am thinking about using 96-00 vortec heads. What do you need to check for when buying heads for the junkyard?

What manual transmissions will bolt up to a 94 SBC block? (I would prefer a 5 or more speed) I am sure any trans other then the truck trans (nv700?) Will need custom driveshaft work.

I have never pulled a SBC apart before so any advice would be great. And suggested parts to replace would also be great. I couldn't find the other boinger thread on my phone.

This is a budget build
