my first ride in an LS2 rx7 today!
I met a guy today who has a 93 rx7 with a auto and ls2 installed with the hinson swap kit.. he took me for a ride in it and i took him to show him my 7 and honestly guys I was very impressed it got up and it went!! very quick car and the tourqe is soo different than a rotory by far.. I dunno which id prefer to honeslty own but I know i wouldnt sniff my nose at an ls1 swap now if it came to that.. expecially if it involved the t56 6 speed.. whoo hoo hold on buddy!!
his motor was completly stock out of a gto, and the only mods was the exhaus from hinson... sounded mean also!! overall if i had the money laying around and i just popped my 13b id do the swap without blinking.. but to each there own.. im happy with rotor power still.. just thought id share my lil story and thoughts!!:Wconfused |
Glad to find another rotard who sees the light. ;)
|
But damn, the swap from a GTO runs 8 grand plus you still have lots of plumbing and mounting issues/costs to worry about. For 10 grand I can build a shitload of rotaries, and have that thing bolted in place and 500 miles put on it before you even get yours mounted up.
The LS swap sounds more appealing than it is, IMO. But perhaps that's because I can build a rotary in a few hours for just a few hundred dollars and be on the road again, while you have to put real money into an LS setup because of the very high demand from all the mad tyte engine swappers out there. |
yeah it was nicely done.. i liked it.. ill keep with my rotor for now.. but if it ever goes i may go lsx power.. hate to say it guys but i was impressed with it.. plus he claimed he got around 24mpg cant beat that with the power!!

Yeah you're going to pay more up front for a swap, but not having to replace engines and the shitty fd trannies all the time made it well worth it for me. |

I still love the turbo rotary and work on other people's third gens all the time. If I had the garage space and disposable income I would also own rotary turbo'd cars because I love doing car builds and they are so much fun to do. |

I pulled out 3 pushrods that looked like an S and thought to myself, you have got to be fucking shitting me. And people say that rotaries are sensitive? :ugh2: |

A mounting kit can be fabricated by anyone with a welder and the ability to use a measuring tape and a level, and the swap can be completed in a weekend by a couple of people. I've nothing against the rotary, but if you want to down talk the V8 swaps, please, at least put some actual effort forth and try to retread the "polar moment" and "weight above the crank" arguments instead of this drivel. |

Just for fun, to add more "drivel" to the mix, out of all the highly modded imports at the nopi drift event, the only car to blow up that I know of was the LS1 converted 240. Someone make me one of those captioned pictures for this: "Engines with parts designed in 1920: Leave them in your truck, not your japanese sportscar" http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/kl...files/rods.JPG |

I can personally tell you that the V8 will blow your mind compared to an equally powerful rotary. I went from a 400+ rwhp single turbo FD to a 400+ rwhp V8 with less hp than the rotary and there is absolutely no comparison, the V8 is so much more fun to drive (note that I did not say faster) .... the effect of the torque curve and exhaust noise are simply mind blowing in the 7. I'm all about the fun, not into bragging or dyno queen stuff, and the V8 is simply more fun to drive.

RotaryResurrection, gotta give a big thanks to you!
The 13B removal writeup on your site was a big help for me. My friend and I both removed our engines this week with the help of your site. Namely, during the time when RX7Club was down! Now we are both officially started in our LSx swaps! |
Glad I could help. Why dont you guys both return the favor by giving me your shitty rotary engines and related parts. That stuff is just an eyesore sitting around the garage anyway, impeding the LSx's path toward your engine bays, so I'd be doing you a favor, it's the least I can do. I'll pay for the shipping and arrange it all myself. Let me know. :)
|
Sold mine already, my friend is selling his if ya want a backup.
|
selling? what's this about selling? we all know rotaries are steaming piles of shit, who would buy one? You should be giving them away just to make more room!

rotary love
let me keep it simple whats the point of ownin an rx7 if your goona put a v8 in it . it defeats the purpose of havin one . if you want a v8 car go buy a mustang or a camaro and leave the rotary's to us who love them.

At least when you rebuild a v8 you dont have to wait 500 miles to get compression back in the motor.Just my 2 cents

trini[/QUO I thought the purpose of having an Rx7 was for the fun of driving it, and it sure is fun with a 570 rwhp V8 running on 93 octane :) |

I didnt think the pushrods had enough space in the engine to get bent that badly?
anyways, if you want I can post a pic of me flicking off my old rotary motor housing where a piece of the water jacket just broke off, wtf.... LAME. ;) |
lol@people gettin butt hurt because some1 posted that they enjoy'd a ride in a v8 fd
|
v8 FD posts anywhere on this forum except "other engine conversions" should be a bannable offense. Nothing good can come from it, as both sides seem deeply rooted in their opinions.
|
The LS car was the only one that blew up last year at nopi as well.....Maybe theres a connection.

They are cool cars.
For me, it was hard to reconcile the sound of the motor/exhaust note while looking a an FD Rx7. It just didn't "fit". I'm sure I would get used to it though! |

I don't see any shit-talking on rotaries, he was just giving his opinion after getting a ride in the swapped FD. Hell, he even said: "i'm happy with rotor power still.." Yeah, he's really stirring up shit

oh cmon now guys i dont care who you are or what you like to drive, at least in an fd swapped car your weight balance isn't shot to shit like it is with a 240 lsx swap. Look at it this way it makes the car heavier and a lil bit harder to steer but compared to what dropping a lsx motor into a 240 does to handling with what it does to an fd... well lets just say keep the v8's in the fd's if you must swap a v8 into your jap sports car.
Now before anyone starts going off about rotaries, i would much rather have a rotary fd thats putting down 500+ than an lsx swapped fd putting down that much anyday. I've built shit tons of piston motors and im just not a big fan of v8's in small sports cars, the torque curve is in the wrong spot. Sure its great for tire burning right off the line but when are you going to actually need to burn those tires unless your in the staging box or in a burnout contest. Just rebuild the rotary turbo that mother and run it hard til it blows and then rebuild, believe me its much better to blow a rotary motor under boost than it is a piston motor. If you blow a piston motor under boost unless you spun a bearing your going to have parts shooting out the block. Then all you have is a useless paperweight that you spent 10k+ for. If you spend that much on your rotary setup you could have 2 motors putting down some sick numbers and when one goes you swap in the other one and rebuild the one that popped. Its still more cost effective to run rotarie than it is to run a v8 putting down 500+ also think of the gas your going to be buying. I dont care what that guy says he gets mpg wise but your not going to be gettin 24mpg unless your absolutely babying the motor which means absolutely no pulls on it. Just enough to get up to speed limit and sit there. At least with a turbo rotary you can get that mpg but still put your foot in it when you want to. Lsx is a great swap just not for me if its going into a small jap sports car, but if i was going to do an lsx swap on any car it would be an fd. I just wouldnt spend the money because i cant think of a single way to justify it when you can just slap a bigger turbo on your motor for a lot less cost. |
Rotaries only blow from bad tuning, its just as reliable as any other engine out there. Who won lemans in 1991???

All the burned oil out of your exhausts has really blinded you guys... Can't believe some of the just ignorant things people say to praise the rotary.
|
Jesus H. I think the OP was pleasantly surprised, much like many of you would be, if you went for a ride in something that has been demonized by this community. To each their own. I like women and some of you like men. It's okay. Really.:icon_tup:
I think I'll swap a 20B into something like and S2K or Accord. Just to be an asshole. |

But damn, a rebuild for a rotary costs 3K, and you'll still have to do it again every other year. For 10 grand I could build a badass forged h/c ls1 that would be completely reliable and make more power n/a on pump gas then 99% of pump gas rotaries, and destroy just about every streetable rotary on spray. The rotary sounds more appealing than it is, IMO. Guess thats because I am way more familiar with v8s and piston engines have been proven time and time again to be superior. [/reverse quote] Hows about I go to the third gen section and find a post about someone getting a ride in an fd and post that reply, would that count as "stirring shit up"? IMO my post about v8 swaps would be more appropriate considering that I would still be talking about a third gen in the third gen section, instead of v8 bashing in the OTHER engine section where posts about rotary engines are COMPLETELY FUCKING IRRELEVANT AND USELESS. Honestly when did it become okay for rotards to come into this section and start arguments in every other thread? I think we need to make a section just for arguing rotary vs v8, we can call it the running in circles section. |

Put whatever motor you want in whatever car you want. My car runs easy 11's in the 1/4 in everyday trim, 27+ mpg on the freeway and is a monster on the roadcourse - I'm happy and could give a fuck what anybody thinks about it :D If you see me at the track or strip feel free to grab a lane, until then I have better things to do....... |
I'm on my second rx7. Blew up the first one, what a shocker. My current 90 GTU is swapped with a LT1 T56 combo. I took it out on the highway for the first time the other night. Holy shit! 60 mph in fourth and tap the gas, it just pins you in the seat. Well, worth the effort. Don't knock it til you've at least experienced one.
|
built piston motors for a living driven v8 swapped 240's and fd's impressive but none the less its cheaper to build a rotary motor that would destroy that v8 plus you dont rape your handling in the car. 240 is way worse than an fd though, if and that is a big if i was ever going to swap a v8 into a tiny jap sports car it would be an fd but unfortunately i dont think i could bring myself to defile the car. Its not so much the v8 thing its the piston thing lol. Piston motor into a chassis that is supposed to have a rotary is like blasphemy at least with the 240 your keeping basically the same type of motor but after you swap a v8 into a 240 kiss your turning days goodbye it will all be straight line spinning til you twist the unibody into a pretzel from the torque of the motor.

Hrhmmm your in wisconsin huh?? I might take you up on this offer next summer. ;)
No replacement for displacment!!!

BTW I have nothing against V8's in FD's or anyother car for that matter. I love the 4g swap in an FD, 2jz etc. I just hate it when people bash rotaries for ALWAYS blowing up or what not. If a rotary is tuned right and is taken care of it will take care of you. Thats all I have to say about that.
|
ive heard of TII's reaching 200k on orig motor......NA's going 250k, every chevy and ford guy is pulling the motor after about 100k to "refresh" the engine with new bearings and other shit. at the 100k mark in a rotary, you're out on the street red lining the shit out of it. why? there is nothing to tear up, no bearings and rings to wear out. in short it is cheaper to build a rotary, just port and go and in the long run it will be cheaper on maintenance.
also why hasnt mentioned the expense of beefier suspension and adding.....dare i say a solid 9" rear in the 7 to handle the extra weight and power. yea a v8 has more torque but then again if the swap was done right you just transformed it into a bloating pig so it needs it. |
To each their own. I might get another FD in about 5+ years with a V8, after I finish CPA school, buy a half-million dollar pot to piss in, and swap a 20B into my current 7.
I've rode in 2 V8 7s. Is the handling that much degraded though? Like Mustang handling bad?? |

No replacement for displacment!!! Otherwise we can do great lakes dragaway or byron. I really haven't got to run many rotary cars since the swap. Most of my local rotary buddies have either sold their cars or rarely bring them out. |
Awesome, when its time for you to go to Road America shoot me a PM, remember!! Hopefully my car will be ready for early spring.
