my first ride in an LS2 rx7 today!

I met a guy today who has a 93 rx7 with a auto and ls2 installed with the hinson swap kit.. he took me for a ride in it and i took him to show him my 7 and honestly guys I was very impressed it got up and it went!! very quick car and the tourqe is soo different than a rotory by far.. I dunno which id prefer to honeslty own but I know i wouldnt sniff my nose at an ls1 swap now if it came to that.. expecially if it involved the t56 6 speed.. whoo hoo hold on buddy!!

his motor was completly stock out of a gto, and the only mods was the exhaus from hinson... sounded mean also!! overall if i had the money laying around and i just popped my 13b id do the swap without blinking.. but to each there own.. im happy with rotor power still..

just thought id share my lil story and thoughts!!:Wconfused

Glad to find another rotard who sees the light. ;)

But damn, the swap from a GTO runs 8 grand plus you still have lots of plumbing and mounting issues/costs to worry about. For 10 grand I can build a shitload of rotaries, and have that thing bolted in place and 500 miles put on it before you even get yours mounted up.

The LS swap sounds more appealing than it is, IMO. But perhaps that's because I can build a rotary in a few hours for just a few hundred dollars and be on the road again, while you have to put real money into an LS setup because of the very high demand from all the mad tyte engine swappers out there.

yeah it was nicely done.. i liked it.. ill keep with my rotor for now.. but if it ever goes i may go lsx power.. hate to say it guys but i was impressed with it.. plus he claimed he got around 24mpg cant beat that with the power!!

Actually lsx parts are really not that expensive anymore. You can now get cylinder heads that make big gains for around $1k complete. Used, aftermarket cams can be had for 150-250. You can build a cheap, 400 rwhp v8 that will outlast a shitload of your rotaries.

Yeah you're going to pay more up front for a swap, but not having to replace engines and the shitty fd trannies all the time made it well worth it for me.

I would agree that it sounds more appealing than it is. It is alot of work and for many it will be very challenging. I would say it's for those that want to do it and I mean want to do the wrench turning and the wiring work to build a more unique car. If you love the V8 sounds it's twice as satisfying when it's done.

Have you ever ridden in a 400+whp RX7?

exactly. I'll keep my engine that I ported and built myself, along with my 67mm turbo, thanks.

I can personally tell you that the V8 will blow your mind compared to an equally powerful rotary. I went from a 400+ rwhp single turbo FD to a 400+ rwhp V8 with less hp than the rotary and there is absolutely no comparison, the V8 is so much more fun to drive (note that I did not say faster) .... the effect of the torque curve and exhaust noise are simply mind blowing in the 7. I'm all about the fun, not into bragging or dyno queen stuff, and the V8 is simply more fun to drive.

I still love the turbo rotary and work on other people's third gens all the time. If I had the garage space and disposable income I would also own rotary turbo'd cars because I love doing car builds and they are so much fun to do.

I dunno man, I was driving "one of my rotaries" for a few days this week while I was repairing the bent pushrods etc. in my Gen III lq4 denali that only revs to 5500rpm.

I pulled out 3 pushrods that looked like an S and thought to myself, you have got to be fucking shitting me. And people say that rotaries are sensitive? :ugh2:

Hmm, my 80 dollar pushrods rev to 7200 RPM without a problem in my Gen III.

I've got one sitting in my garage that makes 360 HP that cost 600 dollars to purchase.

A mounting kit can be fabricated by anyone with a welder and the ability to use a measuring tape and a level, and the swap can be completed in a weekend by a couple of people.

I've nothing against the rotary, but if you want to down talk the V8 swaps, please, at least put some actual effort forth and try to retread the "polar moment" and "weight above the crank" arguments instead of this drivel.

"Drivel" or not, my personal experience stands as fact. Sure, if you look at statistics or numbers, more high power LSx engine setups will continue running than rotaries. But, these things are far from bulletproof, so don't make the v8 swap out to be the end-all blissful experience in automotive ownership or the powerplant of choice in the chariot of the gods.

Just for fun, to add more "drivel" to the mix, out of all the highly modded imports at the nopi drift event, the only car to blow up that I know of was the LS1 converted 240.

Someone make me one of those captioned pictures for this:

Yep, that's torque for ya...makes you feel like you are going faster than what you are. :)

RotaryResurrection, gotta give a big thanks to you!

The 13B removal writeup on your site was a big help for me. My friend and I both removed our engines this week with the help of your site. Namely, during the time when RX7Club was down! Now we are both officially started in our LSx swaps!

RotaryResurrection 11-02-07 10:27 PM

Glad I could help. Why dont you guys both return the favor by giving me your shitty rotary engines and related parts. That stuff is just an eyesore sitting around the garage anyway, impeding the LSx's path toward your engine bays, so I'd be doing you a favor, it's the least I can do. I'll pay for the shipping and arrange it all myself. Let me know. :)

Troux 11-02-07 11:40 PM

Sold mine already, my friend is selling his if ya want a backup.

RotaryResurrection 11-03-07 02:35 AM

selling? what's this about selling? we all know rotaries are steaming piles of shit, who would buy one? You should be giving them away just to make more room!

:fingersx:

rotary love

let me keep it simple whats the point of ownin an rx7 if your goona put a v8 in it . it defeats the purpose of havin one . if you want a v8 car go buy a mustang or a camaro and leave the rotary's to us who love them.

loudazzrx7 11-07-07 07:46 PM

At least when you rebuild a v8 you dont have to wait 500 miles to get compression back in the motor.Just my 2 cents

I thought the purpose of having an Rx7 was for the fun of driving it, and it sure is fun with a 570 rwhp V8 running on 93 octane :)

I think this picture would be funnier if the guy's finger would have been the same shape as the push rods. lol

owen is fat 11-08-07 11:47 AM

I didnt think the pushrods had enough space in the engine to get bent that badly?

anyways, if you want I can post a pic of me flicking off my old rotary motor housing where a piece of the water jacket just broke off, wtf.... LAME.

;)
