ls1??? newbie?
alright so Im seriously considering buying my friends 2nd GEn RX7 turbo. its a beautiful car (white on white wheels), perfect body, no rust. now it is not running, he took some components off, in an attempt to fix some vaccuum lines. needless to say, after he was done he had NO idea what he got himself into and just left the thing apart. so the car is perfect for a swap(in my opinion). now I come from a subaru/ corvette, so the first thing that came to my mind is an LS1 swap. any ideas on other things i can do? is the rotary as much of a pain in the a$$ as those piston/ valve guys make it out to be? your opinions will be greatly appriciated! thanks!

From the sounds of it, the car you are describing is an 88 10th anniversary car. They only made 1500 of them. Im a huge fan of the LS1 conversions, but thats not to say that there is anything "wrong" with the stock rotary.. but for a limited edition car such as that, unless it is really too far gone to bring back, I would rather swap a regular Turbo2.

yeah. well here are my main concerns. A) how hard is it to build the turbo2 rotary?
B) how long will it last (i've heard you have to rebuild the motor every 20k or so)C) how hard would it be to do the ls1 swap and D) how much do complete turboII motors go for?

lol it's funny the rumors that get said about the rotary engine. There are tons of cases with stock tII motors still up and running in the 100k range. Now if you go and put a **** ton of mods on it and make it a 500+rwhp beast then of course it's going to lower those numbers but it's like that for any motor you mod to an extreme. Now as far as putting it together it is pretty simple if you do some searches and/or buy a how to rebuild a rotary engine video. There are only 3 moving parts in it witch makes it very easy.

A) Its very easy to rebuild, but if youve never done it before, there are a ton of little things that can be tricky, I would suggest just buying a good used, or rebuilt engine. You can get a decent budget rebuild (depending on condition of your engine) for less than $1500.
B) If you arent trying to make a ton of power, the engines are very reliable and can last 100k+ easy. I owned a 88 Turbo2 with 170k on the original engine.
C) That question is best answered here: http://www.v8rx7forum.com/
The swap isnt hard, and now you can pretty much buy everything off the shelf to make it almost a 100% bolt-in swap, with just some minor wiring.
D) Depending on condition, usually $500-2500.

Low mile, perfect condition all factory 10AE, straight down to the custom floormats and key.

Nice swap, it yours? Im not gonna freak out or anything.. its just a car and they arent really worth any collectors value yet, but if I had one I would keep it stock. Only cars I wouldnt swap are original 10th AEs and stock CYMs, just because I think they are the most likely to be worth something in the future.

The black car (with the direct port kit) is mine, the white 10AE is one I built for Azar on this forum.
As far as the swap goes, it's very straight forward, no real gotchas honestly. www.v8rx7forum.com is the best place for information. A good mechanic can do the swap in a 3 day weekend. The cars are a blast to drive when completed, I've put 2500 miles on mine this summer already.

yeah, looks that way! so I think ive decided on getting the deluxe kit from grannys, for like 1K, and going that route. now do most people ( or do you) keep the A/C and power steering. how was your experience with hooking (or not hooking) those up? and did you used the mazda or GM Pwrsteering/ A/C pump? I'm going to head over to v8rx7 later tonight
