Yes, keep the rotary.... if you like the rotary, but swap in the v8 if you like the v8's. It is your car. Mazda built some very fine automobiles, but there are some on here that say that the car is a piece of crap if you take the rotary engine out. This is due to shortsightedness. They don't realise that it takes more than just the engine to make a car great.
I personally like both engines. I like the rotary engine because it is outside of the box technology. Both engines have strong and weak points. Rotary's can be very tempermental and will not last long if you don't take care of it regularly. I like pistons because they are very dependable, and can withstand alot more abuse, both performance and maintanance wise. Both engines, when overly abused will break.

Making good power with a rotary can be done, although alot of differences of opinion on how streetable high power rotary's are. They are not known for great gas mileage. In order to make strong dependable power out of one, you have to be a tuner, which most people are not. They may say they are, but thier power numbers show the truth. Good rotary tuners are out there, Just not everyone is. THey are smooth running engines right up to red line. These engines live at high rpm, but lack lots of low rpm torque.

Making good power with a v8 is about as simple as swapping one into your car. Most modern v8's are pushing well above 300 horse power, stock, and with small mods will make 400-500 and up, pretty easily. Stock v8s and even mildly modded ones will usually net you pretty good gas mileage comparitively. They are torque monsters at the bottom end of the rpm band

Getting power to the ground is another important part of your decision. Alot of people putting v8's in these cars usually have to overcome some traction problems.

As far as handling goes, the same guys who thing that an rx7 is junk without the rotary engine in it alos beleive that putting a v8 in it will forever ruin it's handling. Don't listen to that garbage. It has been proven time and again that v8 powered rx7's handle exceptioally well, and in most cases, on a road course, will out perform a rotary powered rx7.

I say in most cases, because there are alot of rotary powered cars out there that perform just as well or better than some of the v8 powered cars. But it is more than just engine. It is drive train, suspension, brakes, Driver, etc.

THere are alot of purists out there who believe that the rotary engine should be left in the RX7. Well if they have a 100% stock original car, and they want to leave it that way, then great- for them. But when a purist starts modding his car, like with aftermarket parts, then it is not pure anymore. If you swap in a complete RB exhaust system, then the car is not 100% original any more. Wheels? suspension? racing seats? head light conversions? So many people swap all this stuff out with out a word, but if you swap in another engine, you have ruined the sole of the car and it is then not worth anything but scrap.

It is your car, do what you want with it. There is alot of info here and there is alot of info over at www.torquecentral.com . Just start reading, and use the search buttons. There is also alot of info at Grannysspeedshop, and Hinsons Supercars. These both make kits for the swaps.

And most of all, enjoy your car, how you want to, not how someone else wants you to.

Later,
Bill
