Here we go...!!! '93 FD RX7 V8 swap

Hi everyone! My name is Brandi and last Saturday i brought home a black/tan '93 rx7. My plan is to do some sort of LS swap with an automatic transmission. The last couple of days have been filled with a lot of wrenching and cleaning things up. Today we finally got the rotary pulled! Here are a couple pics:

good luck! i just picked up my 02 LS1 today for my 93 FD, can't wait

BLUSHS 02-18-13 01:12 AM

I know me too! I still can't figure out what I want to do EXCATLY, but I guess a lot of it has to do with what is available when I'm ready to get the car running. Always looking though! Good luck with yours also!

Stix37867 02-18-13 11:38 AM

Was the engine any good?

Awesome to see a girl who is into an FD! Good luck with the swap! :)

Unsure, Jordan said you might be stopping by sometime tomorrow to take a look at it.

Littleguy 02-19-13 10:06 AM

I prefer a T56 but very nice nonetheless.

I would too if it were going to be more of a street/daily driven car

scotty R 02-20-13 03:25 AM

congrats on your purchase , all the best with your swap and please keep us up to date some pics along the way!!

uummm 02-20-13 10:44 AM

I love a woman who can work on a car. Looks like a fun project, what are your plans as I saw you mentioned it's not going to be a street/dd car.

97SupraTwinTurbo 02-20-13 11:10 AM

A girl who wrenches on cars, awesome! A girl who swaps a LS1 into a FD, even better!

Why the auto trans? The T56 is easy to maintain and use. What are your plans for the FD?

onefastrx7turbo 02-20-13 04:42 PM

Love it! head over to Norotors.com for more info as well....

She's going to make it into a drag racing car is all I can figure. That's the only place the auto is better, and it's better by a lot imo.

BLUSHS 02-20-13 08:47 PM

Yep plans are for a drag car- I have a buddy with a swapped FC with an auto and its amazing the difference it makes. I daily drive a mazdaspeed3 right now and it's a manual which is fun for daily driving.
Yahh I have a thread started on norotors also (I lurked there quite a bit before I bought the car), people seem to be a little bit friendlier here but I'm sure they see a lot of swaps like this go unfinished.

er0x 02-20-13 10:59 PM

Good Luck with the swap! Don't worry too much about NoRotors seeming unfriendly, they're just tough to warm up to (tho being a girl helps). I'm on there too, same name :D Super jelly of the in garage lift btw

97SupraTwinTurbo 02-21-13 05:19 PM

Yes it's easier running really fast in an auto but what's the fun if you're not shifting gears? Ha!

IndyRxtc 02-22-13 06:26 AM

Schweet Grey Brick wainscoting ya got there!

Auto's are faster than sticks?

Good luck with the swap!

86svo9l 02-24-13 08:31 PM

Good luck with the swap!

I am working on swapping an FC right now. I am starting to wonder if there are more swapped RX7s in Iowa than Rotary powered.

A FB I swapped in the 90's went to Viola, IA, so add one more to the list

Yahh no kidding! Maybe some day or another we could get a meet or cruise put together. Does anyone on here go to ICC in Omaha?

Gommit87 02-27-13 01:54 PM

Good luck with the V8 Swap.

I snagged a minty fresh 93 FD with no drivetrain for the last few years, and norotors really helped. But man all the spare FD parts I could ever want are on here! Just cant let either forum know Im on both hehe!

Put in an LS1 and have loved/hated every minute of it. I cant say I honestly agree with the drag car mentality, but thats my opinion, and I still give props because its a cool swap and requires lots of hard work and dedication. But its always good to see it come to fruition. Continue along your path, and PICS!!!!!

Best of luck and nice car :)

SuWorks 02-27-13 05:33 PM

Nice really good luck with it

Don Nguyen 02-27-13 08:35 PM

LS1s are easy to get, but it depends how much power you want to make. I went with an LS1 with my first swap, but going to use an LS2/LS3 this second time around.

vweater1369 02-28-13 08:37 AM

Keep up the good work. Awesome to see a gal who does her own work!

Thank you! Yeah I was pretty lucky this car was a California car for a good majority of its life. It takes a lot of the hassle out of cleaning it up.
So is your car just a driver then? I will keep mine street legal but the plan is to hopefully keep up with friends at the track ;)

Honestly, my plans are to eventually do LS2 but to at least get the car running I am looking for LS1, LQ4, or LQ9. All of which I'm actually having a little trouble finding what I want around the area. The car is ready to start, I just need to jump on something.

Anyone have friends with spare engines...?? Lol

Exidous 03-04-13 08:31 PM

They aren't local but you can try F Parts. They were on ebay still last I looked. They are located in PA. I got my motor from them.

Depends on what you determine as a driver car..
It runs, drives, stops and burns tons of rubber. It is very rough around the edges but is an absolute blast. I do not drag it, only AutoX/Road Race around here.
It will be kept "street legal" but with hobbyist plates, that is a very broad definition. aka 500hp and open headers is still legal.

You will love it, undoubtedly. Just the same as everyone else who has fallen in love with these cars :)

Heck, if your looking I might sell my LS1/T56 combo. Ive been debating a LS3 setup this year !

GeorgeR 03-13-13 06:34 PM

I know you said you were going to do a ls1 with auto trans, I didn't catch if your car was originally an auto or manual. If it was a manual would you consider selling me the clutch pedal assembly?

hmotorcross 03-26-13 02:01 AM

UPDATE:

I can't believe how fast time is going, it's been a while since I updated! Well in the last couple of months I picked up an LQ4 and did some work to the heads (271 heads with a little milling and a little porting) :) Also, picked up a little more aggressive cam. For now the car will have a 4L60e trans which has a yank converter and 3800 stall. Maaaaybe sometime in the future I'll put a T56 in (sorry keeping the manual parts for this for now). Also, sorry rotary and trans have been sold.

http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/...ps54daa420.jpg

Samberg's mount kit came in a couple weeks ago so it is installed (if anyone needs the stock K-member it will be up soon) This guy does great work- totally recommended if your looking to do the swap. Shipping takes a while so make sure to order early. Totally worth it though in my opinion.

http://i1303.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6288d772.jpg

(still working on an auto trans mount. I'm keeping the T56 mount that the kit came with for later on)

Rear end with have 8.8 differential. Ordered axle kit from Samberg also so that's whats being worked on this weekend.

Also, my radiator kit came in the mail last week so that should be in shortly. Will post pics later on.

Over all, it's been a pretty seamless swap just lots of hurry up and stop. Hopefully in the next week or so I'll be able to get some wiring done and get it started! Things are moving along a lot faster now so I'll update as needed.

AlexMartinez 05-26-13 04:33 PM

Nice, good luck with the swap
