Cool Gonna do LS1/FC conversion, rear end Q's

Now, I know that the 87-88 TII had a proper clutch type LSD, while the 89-91 had a VLSD (ewww!). And, when I looked at a engine swap buildup, I saw that owen got a whole TII rear end to bolt up when he was doing the swap.

So, I'm figuring, I should try to get a 87 or 88 TII for the swap. Is this going to be the best route to go? If I snag one with a workign engine/tranny I can sell that, and if its busted, I can sell it for a core or to someone who wants to rebuild it, and then just go with the stock rear (although I'd get the DTSS/Toe bushings in, obviously).

Now, should I really even care about the clutch vs VLSD(and the range of years I'm going to look at)? Should I just go ahead and get an aftermarket LSD?

And, um, is it a good idea at all to get a N/A car with that 7" gear or should I wait for a turbo car?

Also, if I got a NA car and then got a T-II rear diff/suspension, where would I find that, and how much would it cost? Could I sell the N/A rear?

Sorry for all the questions, but I wanna get it out in one post so I dont stretch out a thread asking "by the ways"

it depends on how cheap you can find an S4 T2 for, I wasnt able to find any T2 rollers for cheap. it made more sense to find a Sport or GXL (with the 5 lug setup and front aluminum 4 pot calipers and rear vented rotors) then it did to pick up a used S4 T2 diff and halfshafts. a used T2 diff/halfshafts should be $350 shipped at the most, it would be a good idea to rebuild the diff's clutchplates for $300 if you can while its out of the car, I say this because my diff sometimes doesnt lock anymore and it woulda been soooo easy to have a local shop replace the plates that I coulda bought thru mazdaspeed for cheap... damn.

from what I've heard, the VLSD wont do well with LS1 torque.

EyeOutThere still runs a GXL open diff and spins one wheel sometimes but his car still moves like a bat outta hell... he beat me at an autox last week, drats!

Really there are so many guys parting out T2's that its easy enough to get a base model or some GXL in excellent condition body wise for dirt cheap and then bolt up all of the T2 stuff you might want... rear end, 5 lug hubs, seats, thats about it.

some n/a cars were 2+2 which externally the body is no different... but it does give you an insurance break over a 2 seat turbo car. The 2 seat n/a cars are cheaper to insure also.

T2 car will cost more... and the drivelines really don't sell for much to recoup over a well running n/a 13B.

5 lug, n/a car with S4 ('86-88) Turbo 2 rear pumpkin/axles (need both) swapped in would be the way to go.

I'm running an S4 T2 LSD in my 3rd gen RX-7 pumpkin. Works like a charm as the Torsens are notorious for breakage.

Alright.. so where do I get the S4 TII rearend? Does the whole suspension come with it or is it just a pumpkin and half shafts? When I ask where do I get it, I mean where do i ask around for one? JYs or are there listing to look for? Can I go ahead and put on the DTSS eliminator bushes while its out?

Also, do ALL sports and GXLs have the 4 pots? Well, rather, do all 5 lugs have the 4 pot front brakes? Im trying to keep this on a budget (mwahaha, bang for buck rules) and It would be easier to look at listings than to stick my head in every fender in raleigh.

BTW, thanks guys for the witeups on how to do this swap, yovue really helped bring one of the best hybrids EVER since someone put buffalo wings with bleu cheese dressing to the public.

read more in the 2nd gen forum where it outlines what models come with what.

I think that ANY S4's thathad 5 lugs came with the awesome front calipers and rear vented rotors, but when they came out with the S5's... some of the 5 lugs had a single piston front and some had a nonvented rear rotor.

You can find an S4T2 diff and halfshafts online from anyone parting one out, or a local junkyard if you are fortunate enough. You can use S5T2 halfshafts if you cant find an S4T2 diff with halfshafts. I bought mine together, it was just the rear T-shaped pumpkin and the two halfshafts for $350 shipped, kinda steep but the market was kinda dry at the time I was buying... I've since seen that stuff for up to $200 LESS than what I paid (aaaaaargh!).
www.car-part.com has listings but sometimes JY's advertise even when they dont have the part in stock or its not too cheap anyhow.

when you are doing the rear end work, be sure to throw in the DTSS bushings.

hells yeah, LS1+FC = wicked!
