GM 427 question

Will it fit in a 2nd gen? Do they make a conversion to mate the transmission to the GM 427? I always have been against pulling a rotary to drop in a v8 but I have a 427 Goodwrench crate motor with only a few thousand miles on it. So I figure why not at least look into it to save a FC from being scraped. I have a 1977 Chevy C65 crane truck and the engine is the only thing worth keeping and scrap is up so she is getting scraped but I am wondering about keeping the engine. I know it holds 8qts of oil and I am not sure what else is different besides the pan compared to other 427 engines. Thanks

thats what im doing right now to mine and its an 87 turbo 2---no kits for it but the motor mounts are in the same place from the rear of the block ---the brake booster will hit -ive built my own radiator support --still looking into headers ---not a standard swap by any means----jason

the motor that im putting in mine is a 78 454 bored to 462 and a muncie 4 speed --the rear end will not hold up to the torque of even a stock big block(mine has 500 foot pounds at 4200 rpm)

An iron big block Chevy weighs something crazy like 775lbs.....
LS1 all aluminum can be had for under $1500 and weighs about 450lbs with accessories
5.3 truck engine can be had for $500-1K all day long and weighs about 530lbs with accs
With an upgraded cam/springs, ported TB, headers and tune they can make 375-400rwhp with no other upgrades.

To put a manual transmission behind a BBC unless it is a 4 speed with no overdrive is going to cost $$$$$'s. So do the math before you think your "free" 427 is the correct way to go. You need overdrive as that is a relatively low RPM engine and the 3.90/4.10 rear end won't allow you to go very fast at all without it.

That additional 250lbs+ up front will also make it handle like sh*t and you will need some seriously longer springs to keep it level. There are no off the shelf headers either.

I think I am going to throw it in a 1940's truck, the 427 I have came with almost 500 ft lbs of torque stock so I am sure it will do the job. The wife likes the look of those old trucks and I know where a few are.

im in the process of looking into the headers for mine right now ---it works out to there only being 4 inches on a side clearance for them -had the 3.90 in my last car with an m-21 muncie and larger diameter rear tires and it still went down the road at 60 mph at about 3000 rpm -no good .the rear has to be changed in my new one +yes the big block is heavy (685) pounds thats part of the challenge----i was thinkin 3.23 rear (8.8) in mine ---its for sure not a weekend swap by any means.-----wish they had a ball +socket style for a big block like to swap a small block in a jeep -those work good ----have to look at shorty chevelle headers -rear exit and dont know the angle back on them yet ---im sure it will take a while to find a set that fits good.........jason
