Sold my turbo kit to another LS1/FC guy, and started a new, slightly larger setup.

Precision 76GTS, C6 manifold based hot side, 3.5" downpipe with an electric cutout to bypass the exhaust out the fender when desired. Will have dual 38mm tials, and the 76GTS is a billet.

A little progress so far:

bl00dlust 09-15-11 09:56 PM

i like very much!

digitalsolo 10-17-11 09:02 PM

Working on a couple projects in the off season.

1. 2x FC oil coolers as a big ass transmission cooler. Rear mounted, ducted with 2x electric fans.

2. Replacing factory sheet metal "frame rails" under the car with slightly thicker boxed steel, including thick outriggers for quick jacking points.

I'll snap some pics when I get the projects going.

melvinFC10 10-17-11 10:12 PM

Your car is quite clean. Nice work!

digitalsolo 10-20-11 01:49 PM

Thanks. I figured out the layout for the rear transmission coolers. One will be ducted with no fans (first one in series), second one will not be ducted, but will have 2x 7" fans sealed to it with a shroud (1" standoff to allow for good airflow). Should do the job.

I also picked up the main materials for my new "frame rails" aka subframe connectors today. Might get zealous and start on that this weekend if my buddy brings my fab tools back soon.

speedfreak91 10-26-11 02:22 PM

holy cow man that things bad!

digitalsolo 10-26-11 02:37 PM

Thanks. I'll get some pics up of the new floor support/subframe connectors shortly. Going to try to finish up the driver's side this week.

Also got my oil coolers which are now tranny coolers welded up by my TIG master. Came out really well. I'll snap some pics of those ASAP as well. :)

Also ordering up some more leather to redo the wrap of my custom center console. I kinda whipped the current one up quickly to see if it was comfortable and what people thought. Everybody who has seen it loves it, and I like the feel of it (still need to add a raised arm rest though) so I'm going to go ahead and make some tweaks to get it "perfect". I am finding I still don't use the cup holder for drinks, but it makes a fantastic cell phone holder, since it is deep enough to keep it from flying around under hard acceleration, corners and braking. ;)

Finally, I think I am going to add an 8" sub to the rear hatch area, where the spare would be if I still had a spare tire well instead of a big tranny cooler hanging down there. Going to wire it up with quick disconnects and the sub/amp all in one, so that I can yank it out when I want to. Shouldn't be more than about 25 lbs in total, and the stereo could really use a bit more low end bass, not that an 8" booms particularly. ;)

edit: Didn't realize I hadn't added pics. Here are a couple quickies:

1. Custom center console. The buttons control various aspects of the lockup on the torque converter (2-4 lockup w/ WOT release, 4 only lockup with WOT release and 2-4 lockup with no WOT release).

http://www.ls1fc.com/images/1988t2/7interior1.jpg

And my custom door panel inserts with Phoenix Gold RSD 6.5cs speakers. They are NOT optimally placed or baffled at all, but they are dramatically better than the shitty dry rotted dash speakers I had, and being nice speakers, are more than adequate for a car that doesn't get much stereo usage anyway.

digitalsolo 10-28-11 10:09 PM

Thank ya sir.

Driver's side frame rail in; the front outrigger grabs the door bar plate and the pinch weld, the rear just grabs the pinch weld, though I'm planning to drop an outrigger from the cage down to the the frame rail also.

http://www.ls1fc.com/images/1988t2/IMG_5842.JPG

http://www.ls1fc.com/images/1988t2/IMG_5840.JPG

And my modified oil cooler, which will now be a transmission cooler (thermostat is bypassed). I will have a pair of these, one with 2x 7" fans on it with a sealed shroud, and the second run with a large air scoop to grab air when I'm moving.

http://www.ls1fc.com/images/1988t2/IMG_5846.JPG

Tonight I fabricated a .063" thick aluminum tray that bolts to rivnuts in the frame rail pictured above. This protects and holds the fuel and transmission cooler lines.

digitalsolo 11-11-11 10:33 AM

Passenger side framerail work is almost done, just have to install the rear outrigger.

I'm currently gutting the engine bay electrical system; sold off my stock LS1 computer, wideband, injector driver, etc. and picked up a Big Stuff 3 stand alone unit. This computer should run anything I'd ever plan to do on the car in the future. Honestly, it's probably overkill, but that is kinda the "theme" of this project, so... :)

I'll be custom building a new harness for this system, so I'll put some pics up as I go. I'm also planning on cleaning up the FC factory wiring (the bits that remain) a little more also.

blackedoutFC3S 11-11-11 12:41 PM

So what/how exactly did you do your frame rail? Just cut the stock one out and welded the new one in place?

digitalsolo 11-11-11 01:34 PM

Yeah, I cut out the badly smashed up stock pieces and welded a piece of 1.5" x 3" x .120" thick piece of steel in place. It overlaps the front of the stock rails by 4" and is seam welded in that overlap to tie it all together, as well as the outriggers to the pinch welds.

digitalsolo 01-18-12 06:38 AM

Thanks. Just got it up and running with the new engine management. Still need to verify timing pickup is spot on.

awesome car. every time i see an fc fixed up like this, i get the goosebumps. keep it up!

digitalsolo 01-21-12 01:55 PM

Thanks! Getting the bugs out of the Big Stuff 3 currently.

Jager 01-24-12 12:08 PM

You sir, are more ftw then you know.

PureSeks 01-24-12 02:47 PM

not a big fan of this chassis but nice setup. -wheels

digitalsolo 01-24-12 05:29 PM

LOL, thanks guys. I think. If someone wants to give me some fancy wheels, I'll be happy to use them. As is, these look alright, are round and it's just a street car. I put my money into going fast. ;)

digitalsolo 03-27-12 09:39 PM

With the changes this winter I had to relocate my overflow/puke tank. This will be placed behind the area where a foglight would sit on the passenger side:

http://www.ls1fc.com/images/1988t2/IMG_6453_1.JPG

The bung you can see is the bottom, which has a -4 from the surge tank. On the top is a 1" fitting that had a vent tube out the back of the car to puke if I ever pop a headgasket, that's the theory anyway. ;)

PistonSmash 04-13-12 10:48 PM

I have two questions. First, is the scoop replaceable on the T2 hood. Second, do YOU like the wing? I'm trying to decide whether or not to put it on, because I feel like just putting on the T2 hood will make the car look weird. What are the pros and cons of the wing?

digitalsolo 04-14-12 09:10 AM

The front of the scoop is replaceable, yes.

I like the factory TII spoiler, yes.

vipv35 04-15-12 09:23 AM

Sounds rad!!!

titoine998 04-15-12 10:48 AM

Just amazin...

jimmydanny 05-10-12 04:33 PM

Sick build man! I do have to admit, I do not like the big bulky V8's, especially the american ones with OHV, why do they stick with old tech? Ofc the timing belt is an issue, or can be, but there are other problems with OHV that are hard to go around.

What about a Lexus V8? See them in AE86 alot, aluminum engine weighs 20kgs more than the 4A-GE 1.6l in the AE86. Would be an awesome project for the future, eh?

Anyways, not dissing here, just giving you my two cents on american V8s ;)

Overhead valve pushrod engines are massively more compact vs. overhead cam motors. This means they fit lower/further back in the chassis and are generally lighter than equivalent displacement OHC motors.

Look at this picture of a Ford 4.6L OHC next to a Ford 5.0L OHV motor:

http://www.azrockcrawler.com/_images...4_6-4V-004.jpg

The iron 5.0 is lighter than the aluminum 4.6L, too.

Beyond that, I can turn 7000 RPM (well, I can turn 7500-7800 RPM if I had any reason to) and my heads flow 340 CFM at .600 lift. I don't gain much with an OHC motor and would likely not be able to fit my turbo setup under the hood.

FWIW, I'm a big fan of the new Ford DOHC 5.0L Coyote motor, it's really cool. It also won't fit in an FC. If I decide to do a classic Mustang at some point I may put one in it.

Beyond that, I have been working on resolving some engine management issues on the car lately, finally seem to be sorted out after going to an external crank trigger setup. Car pulls very well on low boost/low timing and a rough tune. Looking forward to seeing what it can do when I lean on it a bit more.

jimmydanny 05-11-12 07:36 AM

As I said, don't misunderstand me, you have done amazing work with your car!

But my reasons will stand till the next world when 7's come with V8's stock ;)

Anyways, 1UZ-FE is the Lexus engine I talked about.

digitalsolo 05-11-12 07:40 AM

Oh, I'm not bothered at all, no worries.

I know the Lexus engines, the 1UZ-FE is nice. Unfortunately it has a few issues:

1. Hood clearance
2. Strut clearance with the turbo setup
3. Sufficient strength to handle 900+ flywheel HP
4. Cost effective transmissions (particularly automatic) that can handle 900+ flywheel HP.

It's a nice setup, I believe there is a supercharged one on my forum in an FC, but failing to clear the hood is a deal breaker for me. For what it's worth I have considered doing a 2JZ powered FC before. That solves most of the issues and if you build like like a 1.5JZ you can keep it under the stock hood.

jimmydanny 05-11-12 08:13 AM

I am considering it if my rotary wont work. The 2JZ that is. I guess 1.5 is 1JZ head?

digitalsolo 05-11-12 01:15 PM

Yes.

rx7fanatic2gen 05-11-12 05:07 PM

nice congrats on the buy man

Screwing around with my buddy's GoPro:

digitalsolo 06-11-12 10:26 AM

Turned the boost up to 12 psi and appear to have hazed 2nd gear in my transmission. Going to swap to a Powerglide (2 speed automatic) and a solid rear. Need to do sweet wheelies.

digitalsolo 06-23-12 10:10 PM

Got some new floormats (FYI, these were made by forum member JasonS):

I've got the lower control arm boxes built and finished up for the 8.8 solid axle setup. Lots and lots of work (about 15 hours into it so far). Hoping to get some good progress on the upper mounts tomorrow. :)
